With a chance of a first round bye still in range for the Fordham softball team, the Rams came up short as the La Salle Explorers swept a doubleheader from the Rams, 6-0 and 4-3, at the Ambler Softball Complex in Ambler, Pa.
With the loss, Fordham finishes the regular season at 33-28 overall, 11-9 in the Atlantic 10, while La Salle ends their season at 22-24 overall, 8-12 in the league.
La Salle capitalized immediately in the first inning, turning three Fordham errors into five unearned runs. In the inning, La Salle got RBI-singles from Laura Beth McCreesh, Ali Shepherd, and Kelli Curcio, all with the bases loaded, while picking up two more runs on an error and fielder's choice.
The Explorers made it 6-0 in the second, as Mary Pat Conville singled up the middle with one out, moved to second on a single by Angelina Bisbiglia, and scored on a single by Michelle Sullivan.
The six runs was plenty for McCreesh, as she threw a three-hit complete game shutout, improving to 11-6 on the year.
For Fordham, Allison Twarowski (11-9) took the loss, allowing five unearned runs on five hits in one inning, while Nicole Ayres threw the final five innings, allowing one run on five hits with seven strikeouts.
In game two, the Rams got off to a better start, taking a 1-0 lead in the first. Melissa Andrews opened the game with a single, moved to third on two wild pitches, and scored on a ground out by Twarowski.
La Salle tied the game at one in the fourth, as Gina Massaro singled, was sacrificed to second, and scored on a double by Bisbiglia.
The Explorers then grabbed a 4-1 lead in the fifth, as they loaded the bases and got two sacrifice flies and an RBI-single by Bisbiglia.
Fordham tried to rally in the seventh, as Andrews hit a two-run home run to left, her second of the season, to close the gap to 4-3. Twarowski followed with a single, but Mary Beth Puccio grounded out to first to end the game.
Beckah Wiggins (12-11) took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits with six strikeouts, while at the plate, Andrews was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI and Meghan Shager also had two hits.
The Fordham softball team will now open play at the 2008 Atlantic 10 Championship as the number four seed and will take on fifth seeded Saint Joseph's at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, May 7th.
