Bronx, N.Y. -
After Tom Davis held the potent Charlotte bats in check last night, it was J.P. Mack's turn to attempt the feat today. Unfortunately, Mack couldn't duplicate Davis' performance, allowing seven runs over the first five-plus innings as Fordham fell to Charlotte, 7-1, in an Atlantic 10 baseball game at Houlihan Park.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 26-20-1 overall, 10-10 in the Atlantic 10, while Charlotte improves to 33-13 overall, 13-7 in the conference.
After being shut out for the first time in an Atlantic 10 game last night, Charlotte wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, picking up three runs in the first. Cory Tilton led off the game with a single for the 49ers and O'Brien Taylor walked to put two on with no outs. Shayne Moody moved the runners up a base with a sacrifice before a walk to Chris Taylor loaded the bases. Rob Lyerly followed with a single to plate Tilton and O'Brien Taylor while Chris Taylor would score later in the inning on a Corey Shaylor ground out.
Charlotte starter Zach Rosenbaum cruised through the first three innings, setting down the first eight Rams he faced before Alex Kenny reached on a two-out single in the third. Fordham had its first chance to get on the board in the fourth as Chris Kaible was hit by a pitch and Ryan McCrann walked with two outs but Rosenbaum struck out Bobby DiNardo to end the inning.
The 49ers picked up two more runs in the fifth as Tilton led off the frame with a walk and he advanced to second when O'Brien Taylor laid down a sacrifice bunt with Mack electing to try for a force at second but Tilton beat the throw. A walk to Moody loaded the bases and another to Chris Taylor forced in Tilton. Mack then struck out Lyerly but on the third strike, Fordham catcher Ryan David threw down to second in an attempt to pick off Moody but his throw went into center field, allowing O'Brien Taylor to score.
Fordham threatened in the bottom of the inning when P.J. Como led off with a single and David walked to put two on and no outs. But Kenny lined out to center on a hit and run play and Como was unable to get back to second to avoid the double play. The Rams still managed to load the bases on walks to Rich Goulian and Danny Leach but Eric Reese grounded out to end the threat.
Charlotte picked up two more runs in the sixth as Aaron Bray opened the inning with a ground rule double and he moved to third on a fly out where he scored on a Tilton single. Later in the inning O'Brien Taylor doubled and he would come around to score on a wild pitch.
The Rams got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Chris Kiable reached on an error, McCrann singled and DiNardo walked to load the bases with no outs. Kaible was then forced at the plate on a Como fielder's choice before a walk to David brought in McCrann. But Kenny struck out and Goulian grounded out to end the frame.
The two teams will close out the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 p.m. at Houlihan Park. Please note the time change from the original schedule.
