Box Score

Mt. Vernon, Va. - In a game where offense was at a premium, the George Washington Colonials scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, and held on a 3-2 win over the Fordham Rams at the Mt. Vernon Softball Complex in Mt. Vernon, Va. It was the Colonials' first ever win over Fordham.

With the loss, Fordham drops to 32-26 overall, 10-7 in the Atlantic 10, while George Washington improves to 12-26 overall, 8-9 in the league.

The game was a pitcher's duel between Fordham's Allison Twarowski and George Washington's Amanda Gabriel as the game was scoreless through four innings.

The Colonials however struck three times in the bottom of the fifth inning to grab a 3-0 lead. Elisa Van Kirk started the rally with a one-out single and moved to second on a single by Amanda Holst. After a force out at third, Chrysanthi Halkiotis then loaded the bases with a single through the right side. Tori Sensi then hit a leaning shot toward first that popped in and out of Erin Fisher's glove. The throw to first then went errant, allowing two runs to score. After a wild pitch and walk to Katie Terrazas, Jackie Yaniga was hit by a pitch to force in the third run.

Fordham closed to 3-2 in the top of the sixth, as Mary Beth Puccio hit a two-run home run to right center, her sixth of the season, scoring Melissa Andrews, who reached on a fielder's choice.

The Rams tried to get the tying run in the seventh, as Erin Fisher and Stephanie Mott both reached on singles with two outs. Twarowski though popped up to the pitcher to end the game.

Twarowski (11-8) took the loss, giving up three unearned runs on four hits with five strikeouts. The Rams' offense managed just six hits against Gabriel, highlighted by Puccio's home run.

The same two teams will match-up for the final game of the series on Saturday, beginning at noon.
