Box Score
Amherst, Mass. -
In his final collegiate start, Fordham's Tom Davis did exactly what he's done over the past four seasons: Give the Rams' a quality start and a chance to win. Davis once again came through for the Rams with seven strong innings, as Fordham topped Massachusetts, 4-3, at Earl Lorden Field in Amherst, Mass.
With the win, Fordham improves to 28-24-1 overall, 12-14 in the Atlantic 10, while Massachusetts falls to 18-26 on the year, 11-15 in the league.
Fordham got the offense rolling in the fourth, taking a 2-0 lead. Angelo Ponte started the inning with a double to right center, and scored on a double by Mike Mobbs. After a failed pickoff attempt moved Mobbs to third, Joe Russo plated Mobbs with a sacrifice fly to center.
The Rams made it 4-0 in the top of the seventh inning. Danny Leach opened the frame with a walk and then scored on a double down the left field line by Rich Goulian. Goulian then stole third and scored on a single by P.J. Como.
After six innings, UMass finally got some offense against Davis in the bottom of the seventh, as Davis faced just one over the minimum through six. Matt Gedman knocked out a two-run single, scoring Adam Tempesta and Jim MacDonald, who both reached on singles.
Chris Kaible then came on in relief of Davis in the eighth, giving up a single run on a sacrifice fly by Tempesta, but then retired the side in order in the ninth, recording his league leading tenth save of the season.
Like the majority of the season, Davis was again stellar, allowing two runs on six hits with three strikeouts for his league-leading ninth win of the year. At the plate, Rich Goulian and P.J. Como were both 3-for-5 with an RBI, while Eric Reese and Mike Mobbs each had two hits.
The same two teams will wrap up their regular season and this series on Saturday afternoon with game time set for noon.
