Baseball Splits with Xavier

Bronx, N.Y. - Tom Davis threw seven and one-third innings of eight-hit ball to pick up his Atlantic 10-leading eighth win of the year and lead Fordham University to a 3-1 win over Xavier University in the first game of an Atlantic 10 doubleheader at Houlihan Park. In the nightcap, Steve Brown and Adam Pasono each collected three hits to lead the Musketeers to a 12-2 win.

With the split, Fordham stands at 27-22-1 overall, 11-12 in the Atlantic 10, while Xavier goes to 21-28 overall, 15-8 in the conference.

In game one, the Musketeers got on the board first picking up a run in the top of the fifth as John McCambridge and Pasono led off back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners. Drew Schmidt then plated McCambridge with a sacrifice fly to left.

The Rams tied the game in the bottom of the frame when P.J. Como singled with one out and Alex Kenny followed with a walk. A Mike Mobbs single loaded the bases and Como came in to score on a Rich Goulian ground out.

Fordham broke the 1-1 tie in the seventh as Kenny walked with one out and Mobbs delivered him with a double.

The Rams tacked on an insurance run in the eighth when Eric Reese led off with a single and stole second. One out later Bobby DiNardo walked and Ryan David followed with a single to score Reese.

Davis (8-2) struck out four over the first seven and one-third while Ryan Sheflott threw the final inning and two-third, allowing no hits, to pick up his first save of the year. Mobbs recorded two of the five Fordham hits in the game.

In the nightcap, the Rams took a 1-0 lead on a Reese RBI single in the first. Goulian led off the inning with a triple to right center and, one out later, Reese delivered him with a single.

Xavier took a 3-1 lead in the second, rapping out four hits against Fordham starter J.P. Mack. Zac Richard led off the Musketeer third with single and Jordan Conley reached on a bunt single. Billy O'Conner moved the runners up a base with a sacrifice bunt and McCambridge followed with a triple to score both runners. McCambridge then came in on a Robbie Kelley comeback single that hit Mack in the left arm.

The Musketeers made it a 6-1 game with three unearned runs in the fifth, taking advantage of two Fordham errors. Pasono opened the Xavier fifth with a single and he stole second. Schmidt then hit a fly ball to Como in center which Como dropped for the first Fordham error of the inning. A Brown single loaded the bases for Bobby Freking, who brought Pasono in with a sacrifice fly. Richard then hit a ground ball to second but Goulian couldn't handle Reese's throw at second, allowing Brown to take second and Schmidt to score. Conley then greeted Fordham reliever, Sheflott, with single, bringing in Brown and giving Xavier a 6-1 lead.

Xavier then took a commanding 11-1 lead with five runs in the sixth, all coming with two outs. Pasono started the rally with a two-out double and he came in to score on a Schmidt single, with Schmidt taking second on a wild throw in from the outfield. Brown then plated Schmidt with a single and Freking was hit by a pitch. Richard reached on an infield single with Brown scoring on a wild throw to first on the play. Conley was hit by a pitch to load the bases and O'Conner brought in Freking and Richard with a single to put the Musketeers up 11-1.

After Xavier scored a run in the top of the seventh on a bases loaded wild pitch, the Rams picked up one in the home half of the inning when Como singled with one out and Kenny walked. One out later, Goulian singled down the right field line to score Como for the 12-2 final.

Como finished game two a perfect 3-for-3 for the Rams while Goulian collected a pair of hits.

The two teams will close out the three-game series with a single game on Sunday afternoon at 12:00 p.m.
