Bronx, N.Y. -
After an offensive explosion on Tuesday, the hits and runs were scarce on Wednesday afternoon in the Fordham-Seton Hall baseball game at Houlihan Park. Despite just one hit in the game, Seton Hall took advantage of 11 walks and four hit batsmen to top the Rams by a final count of 2-1.
With the loss, Fordham drops to 16-14 overall, while Seton Hall moves to 19-12.
Fordham had a solid start to the game, scoring in the bottom of the first inning, as Danny Leach singled with one out, stole second, and scored on a single by Eric Reese.
The score stayed that way until the top of the fourth, where Seton Hall pushed two runs across without a hit. Chris Affinito opened the inning with a walk, and was sacrificed to second. After a foul out, Affinito advanced on a wild pitch, while Dan Lopez drew a walk to put runners at first and third.
After another walk loaded the bases, Sean Gusrang also drew a walk, forcing in Affinito to tie the game. A.J. Rusbarsky then worked out another walk from Fordham starter Max Krakowiak to force in Lopez and take a 2-1 lead.
Seton Hall's bullpen then took over as Brian Dudzinski, Luis Fernandez, Keith Cantwell, and Matt Singer, held Fordham to just two hits over the final six innings of play. The only hits Fordham mustered in that time was a single by Joe Russo in the fourth, and a single by Ryan David in the sixth.
Fernandez (1-2) got the win, pitching three innings of one-hit relief, while Singer recorded his third save of the season.
Krakowiak (2-1) took the loss for Fordham, allowing two runs in 3 2/3 innings, where he didn't allow a hit, but walked seven and hit two batters. John Young came on in relief, pitching 4 1/3 innings without allowing a run, and gave up the only Seton Hall hit, a single by Frank Esposito in the sixth inning. Greg Dimmling also pitched a scoreless ninth inning with two strikeouts for the Rams.
At the plate, Danny Leach was 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, while Eric Reese and Joe Russo each had a hit and a stolen base.
The Fordham baseball team will next be in action on Friday, April 11th, when they begin a three-game Atlantic 10 series against the George Washington Colonials at 4:00 PM at Houlihan Park. The game will be broadcast live on wfuv.org.
