Baseball Falls To Saint Joseph's In Series Finale

Norristown, Pa. - Saint Joseph's Mike Coleman scored three runs, while Brian Hartsell had three hits including the game-winning RBI-single in the eighth, as the Hawks won the final game of a three-game series from the Fordham Rams by a final score of 6-3 at Latshaw-McCarthy Field in Norristown, Pa.

With the loss, Fordham drops to 15-13 overall, 3-6 in the Atlantic 10, while Saint Joseph's improves to 11-19 overall, 4-5 in the league.

The Rams got off to a good start, scoring twice in the first inning. Danny Leach opened with a walk, and then scored on a double down the left field line by Rich Goulian. Goulian then stole third, and scored on a ground out by Eric Reese.

The Hawks got one run in the bottom of the first, as they loaded the bases with no outs on two walks and a single. Ben Wendle then reached on an error, allowing Mike Coleman to score. Rams' starter Peter Kennelly though got out of the jam with a strikeout and a double play to leave the score at 2-1.

Saint Joseph's tied the game in the third, as Coleman singled, stole second, moved to third on a single, and scored on a hit from Matt Barnathan.

The Hawks then grabbed a 3-2 lead in the fourth, as Ken Pustizzi double to right and scored on a single by Joe Cook.

Fordham was still down by one in the eighth, where the Rams tied the game at three. Mike Mobbs drew a walk to open the frame, and was sacrificed to second by Leach. After a walk to Goulian and a strikeout by Reese, Chris Kaible singled through the left side, scoring Mobbs to tie the game.

Saint Joseph's then came right back to score three times in the bottom of the eighth. With a runner on first and two outs, Coleman was hit by a pitch, which was quickly followed by an RBI-single from Hartsell. The Rams then tried to get Coleman running for third, but the throw went errant, allowing him to score as well. David Valesente then single to right, scoring Hartsell for a 6-3 lead.

Fordham did get a base runner in the ninth, as Ryan David drew a one out walk, but couldn't do much, leaving him stranded.

The Rams' offense was kept in check for most of the afternoon, managing just four hits in the game, as the Saint Joseph's bullpen, allowed just one hit over the final three innings.

Chris Kaible (1-1) took the loss in relief, allowing three runs in two innings of work, while starter Peter Kennelly went the first six, allowing three runs on seven hits. Offensively, Rich Goulian was 1-for-3 with an RBI-double and a stolen base, his 20th of the season.

The Fordham baseball team will next be in action on Tuesday, April 8th, as they play at NJIT, beginning at 4:00 PM.
