With a total of six home runs hit on the day, offense was the name of the game at the UD Softball Stadium on Saturday. In the opener, Fordham won by a 10-9 count, but couldn't get the sweep, falling to Dayton, 7-3, in the nightcap.
With the split, Fordham is now 15-19 on the season, 5-3 in the Atlantic 10, while Dayton moves to 16-17 overall, 3-5 in the conference.
In game one, Fordham opened with a 1-0 lead in the first, as Melissa Andrews singled to left and stole second. After a walk to Mary Beth Puccio, Allison Storc singled to left, scoring Andrews.
Fordham then scored five times in the second to lead, 6-0. With two on and two outs, Andrews singled through the left side to load the bases. Puccio then looped a single down the right field line, scoring Samantha Pellechio and Allison Twarowski. Storc then blasted a three-run home run to left, her fifth of the season.
The Rams made it 8-0 in the third, as Jessica Weckenman drew a walk, followed by a two-run home run to left center by Pellechio, the first of her career.
Dayton fought their way right back into the game, scoring seven runs on four hits and three walks in the bottom of the third. The biggest blast of the inning was a grand slam home run to right center by Allie Falk, the first of her career.
Fordham got a run right back in the top of the fourth, as Andrews led off with a walk and stole second. Jocelyn Dearborn then knocked a double down the left field line to score Andrews for a 9-7 lead.
The Rams made it 10-7 in the seventh, as the Rams had first and third with two outs. Stephanie Mott then laced a double to left, scoring Erin Fisher. Sarah Campbell also tried to score from first on the play, but was thrown out at the plate.
Dayton threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, as they loaded the bases with one out. Emily Stegeman singled to center, scoring Anne Maci. Falk then lifted a deep fly ball to center which was caught by Andrews, scoring Laura Matthews on the sacrifice fly. On the play though, both runners tried to advance with Stegeman getting thrown out trying to go to second.
For Fordham, Allison Twarowski (5-5) got the win in relief, pitching 4 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on five hits. At the plate, Allison Storc was 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI, while Samantha Pellechio was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI.
In game two, Dayton grabbed the lead in the bottom of the second, as they picked up two unearned runs. With two on and two outs, Falk hit a fly ball to the right center gap, which Andrews dropped in center, allowing both runners to score.
Fordham pulled within 2-1 in the third inning, as the Rams loaded the bases with Dearborn knocking an RBI-single through the left side to score Andrews.
Dayton then scored three time in the bottom of the third, as the Flyers got the bases loaded, and received an RBI-single from Matthews and a two-run single by Stegeman.
Dayton's Blair Crabtree made it a 7-1 game, as she hit a two-run home run to center, her fourth of the season.
Fordham tried to get a rally going in the seventh, as Twarowski and Puccio each connected on a solo home run, but it wasn't enough as the Flyers held on for the win.
Beckah Wiggins (6-6) took the loss, allowing five earned runs on eight hits. Twarowski finished 3-for-4 with a home run in the game, while Dearborn and Weckenman were each 2-for-3 at the plate.
The Fordham softball team will next be in action on Tuesday, April 8th, as they host Fairleigh Dickinson for a doubleheader, beginning at 3:30 PM.
