Fordham's Rich Goulian collected four of Fordham's 15 hits, while Ryan David, Chris Kaible, and Rob Iacono each drove in two runs, as the Rams topped Saint Joseph's, 9-2, in the first game of an Atlantic 10 doubleheader. In the nightcap, the Hawks' Randy Mower went seven innings and struck out five, as the Hawks won 6-4. Both games were played at La Salle's Hank DeVincent Field.
With the split, Fordham is now 15-12 on the year, 3-5 in the Atlantic 10, while Saint Joseph's moves to 10-19 overall, 3-5 in the league.
In game one, Fordham opened with a 1-0 lead in the third, as Rob Iacono opened the frame by reaching on an error and moving to second. After a groundout moved Iacono to third, he then scored on an infield single by Eric Reese.
Fordham made it 2-0 in the fourth on an RBI-single by Iacono, scoring P.J. Como, who singled and stole second.
The Hawks got on the board in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI-single by Matt Barnathan.
Fordham regained a two-run lead in the sixth, as with two outs, Danny Leach singled to left, followed by an RBI-double by Rich Goulian.
The Rams then broke the game open with three runs in the seventh to take a 6-1 lead. Bobby DiNardo started the inning with a single, while Como was hit by a pitch. After a fielder's choice forced DiNardo at third, Ryan David ripped a double down the left field line, scoring Como and Alex Kenny. Iacono followed with another RBI-single, scoring David.
Fordham made it 7-1 in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Como, and then tacked on two more in the ninth on a two-run single by Chris Kaible.
The nine-run effort was more than enough for Fordham starter Tom Davis, who went eight innings, allowing one run on nine hits for his third win of the season. At the plate, Rich Goulian was 4-for-6, while Rob Iacono and Chris Kaible each had two hits and two RBI.
In the nightcap, Saint Joseph's opened up a 3-0 lead by the fifth inning, picking up a single run in the first, fourth, and fifth innings.
In the first, Brian Hartsell connected for a solo home run to right, while in the fourth, Mike Coleman came up with an RBI-double, scoring David Valesente. The Hawks picked up their third run on an RBI-ground out by Ken Pustizzi.
Fordham then grabbed a 4-3 lead with a four-run sixth. Mike Mobbs started the rally with a single, followed by a Goulian single. Reese then singled home Mobbs, with Goulian going to third and Reese taking second on the throw. DiNardo then reached on an infield single, which scored Goulian and moved Reese to third. After DiNardo stole second, the Rams got an RBI-ground out from Como and an RBI-single from Danny Leach to grab a 4-3 advantage.
The Hawks then regained the lead with a three-run seventh, getting RBI-singles from Pustizzi, Chris Hildreth, and Valesente.
Fordham attempted to tie the game in the ninth, as Como opened the inning with a walk. Leach then singled through the right side, but Como would get thrown out trying to go to third on the play. Saint Joseph's Chris Prescott then got David to foul out and Iacono on a strike out to end the game.
For Fordham, J.P. Mack (1-3) took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits in four innings of work. At the plate, Danny Leach was 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Bobby DiNardo was 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI.
The same two teams will match-up for the final game of the series on Sunday at noon.
