Staten Island, N.Y. -
Wagner's Hailey Corthell drove in six runs in the first game of a doubleheader as the Seahawks upended Fordham, 13-5 in five innings, while in the nightcap, Meghan Shager and Mary Beth Puccio each had three of Fordham's 15 hits, as the Rams won game two, 12-4.
With the split, Fordham is now 32-25 overall, while Wagner moves to 27-20 on the year.
Fordham grabbed the early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, as Jocelyn Dearborn reached second on an error, moved third on a wild pitch, and scored on a double by Samantha Pellechio.
Wagner responded right away and often, sending 12 batters to the plate in the bottom half of the second, scoring seven times. The biggest damage was a three-run triple by Ami Iwicki and a two-run double by Hailey Corthell.
Fordham cut the deficit to 7-4 with a three-run third inning. Stephanie Mott opened the rally with an infield single and moved to third on a double by Allison Twarowski. Melissa Andrews then singled to right, scoring Mott. After Andrews stole second, Twarowski scored on a ground out by Mary Beth Puccio. Allison Storc then ripped an RBI-single through the left side to score Andrews.
The Rams continued to close in on the Seahawks in the fourth, as Erin Fisher connected on a solo home run to left center, her sixth of the season, to make it a 7-5 game.
Wagner returned the favor, scoring three times in the bottom half of the inning, to take a 10-5 lead. The Seahawks got an RBI-double by Corthell and a two-run single by Kate Eshelman.
The Seahawks then invoked the mercy rule in the fifth, as Corthell hit a three-run home run to right center that hit the top of the fence and bounced over for her third of the season.
Beckah Wiggins (12-10) took the loss, allowing seven runs on seven hits in 1 1/3 innings pitched. At the plate, Storc was 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the offense.
In game two, Wagner got the opening run in the bottom of the second, as Eshelman drew a walk and was sacrificed to second. After an out, Pinkus reached on a dropped third strike where the ball got away from Sarah Campbell at first, allowing Eshelman to score.
Fordham bounced back to score four runs in the top of the third to take a 4-1 lead. Meghan Shager and Campbell opened with infield singles, and advanced on a wild pitch. After a pop up, Twarowski drew an intentional walked to load the bases. Shager was then forced at the plate on a ground ball, bringing Storc to the plate. She then ripped a single through the left side, scoring Campbell and Twarowski. The ball however was also misplayed, allowing Andrews to score from first with Storc moving to second. Storc then stole third and scored on an infield single by Puccio.
The Seahawks cut the deficit to 4-2 in the bottom half of the frame, as Stevens hit a solo home run to center, her third of the season.
Fordham got that run right back in the fourth, as Pellechio led off with a double to left, and later scored on an error.
Fordham then tacked on three runs in the top of the sixth, as Shager started the rally with a single to left. Campbell then reached on an infield single with both runners moving up on an error. Erin Fisher then ripped a pinch-hit single through the left side, scoring Shager. Mott then re-entered the game and stole second. Campbell then scored on a wild pitch, while Mott scored on a sacrifice fly by Twarowski.
The Rams added four runs in the top of the seventh to take a 12-2 lead. Puccio started the frame with a double to left, and advanced to third on a passed ball. Dearborn then singled up the middle to score Puccio. Pellechio then reached on an infield single, followed by an RBI-double by Shager. After Mott reached on an error to load the bases, Twarowski hit a two-run single to put the Rams up double figures.
The run support was more than enough for Nicole Ayres (9-8), as she threw a complete game six-hitter with four strikeouts. At the plate, Puccio and Shager each had three hits, while Twarowski drove in three runs.
The Fordham softball team will next be in action on Friday, May 2nd, as they play at Atlantic 10 opponent, George Washington University, beginning at 4:00 PM.
