Davis' Complete Game Leads To 9-1 Win Over Temple

Ambler, Pa. - Fordham's Tom Davis baffled Temple hitters all game long, throwing a complete game five-hitter, while Rich Goulian had his second straight four-hit game, as the Rams defeated the Temple Owls, 9-1, at Skip Wilson Field in their Atlantic 10 series opener.

With the win, Fordham improves to 23-18-1 overall, 7-9 in the Atlantic 10, while Temple falls to 20-19 overall, 11-5 in the league.

After Temple got out to a 1-0 lead on a ground out by Mark Ortega, Fordham tied the game at one in the top of the third. With one out, Rich Goulian singled through the right side, stole second, and scored on a triple by Danny Leach.

Fordham then scored five times in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead. P.J. Como was hit by a pitch to start the rally and stole second, one of 11 stolen bases for Fordham on the afternoon.

After a walk to Ryan David, Alex Kenny singled down the left field line to score Como. Goulian then reached on an infield single to load the bases with one out. After a fielder's choice got David at the plate, Eric Reese reached on a throwing error by the pitcher, allowing Kenny and Goulian to score. Leach then had a straight steal of home, while Reese stole third. Chris Kaible finished the rally with an RBI-single to left, scoring Reese.

Fordham then tacked on single runs in the sixth, seventh, and ninth innings to grab a 9-1 lead. In the sixth, the Rams loaded the bases on a walk to Kenny and singles by Goulian and Leach. Reese then plated Kenny with a sacrifice fly.

In the seventh, Como reached on an infield single, stole second and third, and scored on a single by Kenny, while in the ninth, Como reached third on a double and an error, and scored on a ground out by David.

The nine runs was plenty for Davis, as he scattered five hits over nine innings of work with five strikeouts. At one point, he retired 13 straight batters, and allowed just two runners past second in the game. The complete game was Davis' first since April 22nd of last season against Saint Louis and improved his record to 6-2 this year.

At the plate, Goulian was 4-for-6 with two runs and two stolen bases, while Como was 2-for-4 with three runs and three stolen bases. Reese also had three steals on the day to go with two hits, while Kenny was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Leach added two hits and two stolen bases with Kaible adding two hits and an RBI.

The same two teams will match-up for the second game of the series on Saturday, beginning at 1:00 PM.
