Softball Splits Doubleheader With Marist

Bronx, N.Y. - Erin Fisher's pinch-hit double in the bottom of the fifth inning turned out to be the difference maker, as Fordham posted a 9-6 victory over the Marist Red Foxes at Bahoshy Softball Field on Wednesday afternoon. In game one, Marist's Megan Rios pitched a complete game four-hitter, as the Red Foxes won the opener, 2-1.

With the split, Fordham is now 28-23 on the season, while Marist goes to 18-23.

In game one, Marist got on the board just four batters into the game, as Jessica Green singled with two outs, followed by a two-run home run by Annie Castellano, her second of the season.

Fordham cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the fourth, as Mary Beth Puccio opened the frame with a walk, followed by a triple by Allison Storc to score Puccio.

The Rams almost tied the game in the fifth, as Megan Waldron and Erin Fisher opened with back-to-back singles. The Rams however could not advance the runners, as Megan Rigos retired three straight batters, Beckah Wiggins, Allison Twarowski, and Melissa Andrews, to end the threat. Rigos closed out the game, retiring the final nine batters she faced, improving to 13-10 on the year, as she allowed one run on four hits with six strikeouts.

For Fordham, Twarowski (8-7) took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits with four strikeouts. Wiggins threw the final three innings, allowing just two hits with four strikeouts. At the plate, Storc was 2-for-3 with a double and a triple.

In game two, Fordham opened the scoring with single runs in the first and second inning for a 2-0 lead. In the first, Puccio and Storc reached on consecutive singles with Jocelyn Dearborn knocking in Puccio with a single to left. Samantha Pellechio then led off the second with a double, moved to third on a single by Stephanie Mott, and scored on a ground out by Twarowski.

Marist responded with three runs in the top of the third, as Green connected for a three-run home run to left, her fourth of the season.

The Rams quickly responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 6-3 lead. Puccio, Storc, and Dearborn started the frame with three straight singles. Meghan Shager then reached on an infield single to score Puccio. Storc then scored on a fielder's choice, but the throw went errant, allowing Dearborn to score as well. Pellechio also scored later in the inning on an error.

After a scoreless fourth inning, Marist tied the game at six in the top of the fifth, highlighted by a two-run double from Green.

Fordham regained the lead quickly in the bottom half of the frame, as Pellechio and Mott reached on singles with one out. Fisher then ripped a pinch-hit double down the left field line to score Pellechio. Mott then scored on a sacrifice fly by Twarowski.

The Rams tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Waldron, scoring Storc, who reached on a single.

Wiggins (12-8) picked up the win in relief, pitching the final 2 2/3 innings without allowing a hit and striking out two. Nicole Ayres went the first 4 1/3 innings, allowing five earned runs on nine hits. At the plate, Dearborn was 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Pellechio was 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Puccio, Storc, and Mott also had two hits apiece for Fordham.

The Fordham softball team will next be in action on Friday, April 25th, as they play at Atlantic 10 opponent, Saint Joseph's University, beginning at 3:00 PM.
