Bronx, N.Y. -
Rich Goulian banged out two hits, including his 200th career hit, and Shane Fox hit an inside the park three-run home run to lead Fordham University to an 10-4 win over Iona College at Houlihan Park on Tuesday night. With the win, Fordham improves to 21-18-1 on the year while Iona falls to 1-33.
Goulian singled in the third to collect his 200th career hit, becoming just the tenth player to register 200 hits at Fordham, joining teammate Eric Reese who accomplished the feat earlier this year.
The Gaels took a 1-0 lead in the first when Mike Walraven singled with one out and moved to third on an Allie Abbatiello double. Andrew Passerelle then plated Walraven with a ground out.
The scored remained 1-0 until the bottom of the third when the Rams took advantage of two Iona errors to score seven unearned runs. Joe Russo led off the frame with a walk and he stole second. After a walk to Goulian, Iona starter Nick Stanziani got Danny Leach to fly out. Reese then hit a ground ball to Passerelle at first but Passerelle couldn't handle the ball, allowing Reese to reach safely, Goulian to take third and Russo to score. After Reese stole second, Bobby DiNardo brought in Goulian with a sacrifice fly to make it a 2-1 game. Ryan McCrann was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners and P.J. Como reached on another Iona error with Reese scoring on the play and McCrann moving to second. Stanziani appeared to get out of the inning as he got Fox to hit a high fly to center, but Iona centerfielder Trevor Hybner couldn't find the ball and it drop in deep center allowing Fox to circle the bases and give Fordham a 6-1 lead. Singles from Chris Walker and Russo put two on with two outs and Goulian collected his 200th hit by driving in Walker with a single.
Iona came back to cut the Fordham lead to three, 7-4, with a three-run fourth. Abbatiello led off with a single and he went all the way to third when the ball was misplayed by Fox in leftfield. Passerelle plated Abbatiello with a double down the leftfield line and he came around to score on an Andrew Wernicki triple. Wernicki then scored when Ralph Marzella reached on an error.
The Rams picked up three more in the bottom of the sixth to take a 10-4 lead as Goulian led off the frame with a triple and, one out later, Reese delivered him with a double. After Reese stole third, DiNardo walked. DiNardo then stole second with Wernicki, the Iona catcher, throwing down to third on the play. But his throw got away from the third baseman allowing Reese to score and DiNardo to take third where he would score on a McCrann ground out.
John Flanagan (3-2) picked up the win on the mound for the Rams, throwing the first five innings, allowing seven hits and striking out seven while Jake Rabinowitz threw two innings of relief, striking out three, and Ryan Sheflott threw the final two innings, allowing one hit and fanning two.
The Rams will next be in action on Wednesday night, April 23rd, as they host New York Tech at Houlihan Park at 7:00 p.m.
