Bronx, N.Y. -
It was Senior Day at Fordham's University Bahoshy Field on Sunday but it was a junior who stole the show. Junior Megan Waldron connected on a one-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to lead Fordham to a 2-1 Atlantic 10 softball win in game two to complete the Rams' sweep of Charlotte. In the first game, senior Allison Twarowski threw a complete-game two-hitter and drove in two runs to lead Fordham to a 3-1 win.
With the sweep, the Rams improve to 25-22 overall, 7-5 in the Atlantic 10, while Charlotte falls to 27-24 overall, 9-5 in the conference.
In game two, Samantha Pellechio reached on an infield single with one out in the bottom of the seventh and Waldron ended the game with her second home run of the year.
The 49ers took a 1-0 lead in the first as Sarah Malene led off the game with a walk, stole second and moved to third on a ground out. She then scored on a Serena Smith infield single.
That single would be the only hit Fordham starter Beckah Wiggins would allow until the fifth when she gave up a two-out single to Malene, who stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. But she was stranded there when Smith fouled out to end the inning.
Wiggins (10-8) picked up the win on the mound for the Rams, throwing a complete-game three-hitter, striking out five.
In the first game, Fordham took a 3-0 lead with a three-run second as Erin Fisher and Waldron led off reaching on consecutive errors, putting runners on first and second. Pellechio followed with a single to score Fisher with Waldron moving to third. After Pellechio stole second, Twarowski brought both runners home with a single through the right side.
Twarowski (8-6) made the three runs hold up as she allowed just an unearned run in the third to pick up her eighth win of the year.
The Rams threatened in the bottom of the third as Mary Beth Puccio led off with a walk and, one out later, Jocelyn Dearborn doubled her to third. But Pellechio was cut down at the plate on a Fisher ground ball to short.
Fordham threatened again in the sixth when Fisher led off with a single and Waldron sacrificed her to second. Pellechio then reached on an error, moving Fisher to third, but she would be stranded there as Stephanie Mott fouled out and Twarowski grounded out to end the frame.
The Rams will next be in action on Tuesday, April 22nd, as they travel to Hamden, Connecticut, to face Quinnipiac University for a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
