Final Stats

Jersey City, N.J. - Mary Beth Puccio collected five hits and drove in three runs to lead Fordham University to a doubleheader softball sweep of Saint Peter's College on Jaraschak Field. Puccio went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI while Beckah Wiggins threw a complete game six-hitter in a 4-1 win in game one and then Puccio collected two more hits and drove in another run the Rams' 7-4 game two victory.

With the wins, Fordham improves to 23-21 while Saint Peter's falls to 4-26.

In the first game, the Rams took a 1-0 lead in the first as Puccio connected on a solo home run, her fourth of the year.

A two-run third extended the Fordham lead to 3-0 as Stephanie Mott led off the inning with a single and Allison Twarowski followed with a home run, her fifth of the season.

Fordham added another run in the top of the seventh when, with two outs, Twarowski reached on an error and Melissa Andrews singled her to third. Puccio then sent a single up the middle to plate Twarowski.

The Peahens finally got to Wiggins in the bottom of the seventh as Ariana Payan led off by reaching on an error and Tricia Reingle and Samantha Gable followed with singles to load the bases with no outs. After Wiggins got Ashley Brown to fly out, Christie Crowell singled to deliver Payan. Kristen Kinneer then hit a ground ball to Mott at second and Mott's throw home forced Reingle for the second out before Chrissy Gannon flied out to end the game.

Wiggins (9-7) allowed just the one unearned run while striking out eight for the Rams to pick up her team-leading ninth win of the season.

In the nightcap, the Rams struck for a pair of runs in the first as Twarowski led off the game with a bunt single and Andrews reached when her sacrifice attempt was misplayed, allowing Twarowski to advance to second. A Puccio single loaded the bases for Allison Storc, who brought in Twarowski and Andrews with a single.

Saint Peter's made it a one-run game with a tally in the bottom of the second, on a Payan solo home run, before the Rams made it a three-run contest with a run in the top of the third. Puccio led off the Fordham third with a triple and scored when Storc reached on an error.

A run in the fourth increased Fordham's lead to 4-1 as Meghan Shager and Sarah Campbell led off with bunt singles to put runners on first and second. Twarowski then delivered Shager with a single up the middle.

A Reingle RBI double in the fifth made it a 4-2 game before the Rams took a 6-2 lead with a two-run sixth. Shager led off the Fordham sixth with a bunt single and took second on an error on the play. Campbell moved Shager to third with a sacrifice and Twarowski reached on an error, allowing Shager to score. Twarowski would score later in the inning on a Puccio ground out.

The Rams added another run in the seventh on a Shager RBI triple for the 7-2 final.

Twarowski (7-6) went the distance on the mound for the Rams, allowing two runs while striking out six. Shager finished game two 3-for-4 with a triple and an RBI while Twarowski collected a pair of hits and scored twice.

The Rams will next be in action on Wednesday, April 16th, as they travel to Hempstead, N.Y., to face Hofstra University for a single game beginning at 4:00 p.m.
