Bronx, N.Y. -
Fordham University senior pitcher Tom Davis became the school's all-time leader in innings pitched today, bringing his career total to 300 and two-thirds innings. But over those 300-plus innings, it would be hard to find a better eight innings than he threw against George Washington this afternoon as Davis hurled eight innings of four-hit ball, striking out nine, to lead the Rams to a 3-0 Atlantic 10 baseball win over the Colonials at Houlihan Park.
With the win, Fordham improves to 17-14 overall, 4-6 in the Atlantic 10, while George Washington falls to 16-16 overall, 5-5 in the conference.
Davis (4-2), who had two combined shutouts last year, set down eleven straight batters at one point and allowed only two base runners to reach second as he picked up his team-leading fourth win of the year. He surpassed Javier Martinez, who threw 296 and one-third innings from 2004-07, on the Fordham career innings picthed list. Chris Kaible threw a perfect ninth to earn his team-best sixth save of the season.
Davis got off to a bit of a shaky start as with two outs, he gave up a single to Charlie Kruer and then walked Curtis Eward to put two on but he then retired Andrew Abokhair on a comebacker to end the inning.
Davis led off the George Washington second by walking Tim Reeves before settling down and retiring the next eleven hitters.
The Rams would pick up all the runs they would need in the third as Ryan David led off the frame with a single, and one out later, Rich Goulian walked. Danny Leach was then hit by a pitch to load the bases and Eric Reese followed with a single to plate David and Goulian and give the Rams a 2-0 lead. The hit extended Reese's team-best hitting streak to 13 games.
The Colonials threatened in the sixth as Eward reached on a one-out double and one out later, Abokhair walked. But Davis induced Reeves to ground out to end the inning.
Fordham tacked on another run in the seventh when Bobby DiNardo singled to open the inning and stole second. Two outs later, Goulian singled up the middle and DiNardo came in to score when George Washington catcher Abokhair couldn't hold on to the ball as he attempted to tag DiNardo.
Tom Zebroski led off the Colonial eighth with a single but Davis quickly ended that threat as he got Bryan Hwang to ground into a 5-4-3 double play.
Leach finished the game with two of the six Fordham hits on the day.
The two teams will continue the three-game series with a single game tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
