For the second straight doubleheader, the Fordham softball bats were lively, collecting 23 hits, including home runs from Allison Twarowski, Erin Fisher, and Megan Waldron, as the Rams swept a doubleheader from the Seton Hall Pirates, 4-1 and 11-2 in five innings, at Bahoshy Field.
With the sweep, Fordham reaches the .500 mark for the first time since the second game of the season at 19-19, while Seton Hall falls to 15-22 on the year.
In game one, Seton Hall opened the game with a 1-0 lead in the first behind two walks, a sacrifice bunt, and an RBI-single from Kealan Waldron.
Fordham then grabbed a 2-1 lead in the third. With one out, Allison Twarowski tied the game with a solo home run to right center, her second of the season. Melissa Andrews followed with a double to left center, and then scored on a single by Mary Beth Puccio.
The Rams increased their lead to 4-1 in the fourth, as Samantha Pellechio reached on an error to open the frame, with Erin Fisher crushing a two-run home run to left center, her fourth of the season.
The three-run lead held up, as Nicole Ayres (5-8) threw five innings of relief, giving up just three hits with six strikeouts. Beckah Wiggins started the game, throwing the first two innings giving up one hit and five walks. At the plate, Fisher was 2-for-3 with a double and a home run, while Puccio went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
In game two, Fordham exploded for a 6-0 lead with a six-run second. Allison Storc started with a single and moved third on a fielder's choice error by the shortstop with Jocelyn Dearborn taking second on the play. Megan Waldron then singled up the middle scoring both runners. The Rams then loaded the bases on singles by Pellechio and Sarah Campbell, but on Campbell single the pitcher threw the ball away at first, allowing Waldron to score. Twarowski then reached on a fielding error, allowing Pellechio to score from third. Andrews then put Fordham ahead 5-0 on a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Campbell, with Puccio driving in the final run of the rally with an infield single to score Twarowski.
Seton Hall made it a 6-2 game in the top of the third on a two-run double by Kealan Wadron, but Fordham came right back to score five times in the bottom half of the inning for an 11-2 lead. With one out, Megan Waldron got things started again as she knocked out a solo home run to left, her first of the season. The Rams then put together three straight singles by Pellechio, Campbell and Stephanie Mott, to load the bases for Twarowski, who then doubled, scoring two runs. Andrews and Puccio then recorded back-to-back RBI-singles for the final runs of the contest.
Ayres (6-8) recorded her second win of the day, as she threw the first three innings of the contest, allowing two runs on five hits, while Twarowski threw two innings of hitless relief to go with three RBI offensively. At the plate, Waldron was 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBI, while Puccio, Campbell, and Pellechio each had two hits.
The Fordham softball team will next be in action on Friday, April 11th, as they host Manhattan College for a 3:30 PM doubleheader at Bahoshy Field.
