NYIT Walk Off Home Run Does In Baseball

Old Westbury, N.Y. - New York Tech's Denten Neill hit a walk off solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Bears to a 6-5 victory over the Fordham Rams at President's Field in Old Westbury, N.Y.

With the loss, Fordham falls to 13-11 overall, while New York Tech improves to 6-8.

Fordham opened the scoring immediately in the first, as they loaded the bases on a single by Eric Reese and walks to Rich Goulian and Bobby DiNardo. P.J. Como then connected on a two-run single to right center, scoring Goulian and Reese.

New York Tech cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the third inning, as the Bears capitalized on two Fordham errors. Jerry Smith drew a walk. Tom Leonick then singled to left center, but the ball got by left fielder Bobby DiNardo, allowing Smith to score from first.

Fordham went back ahead by two in the top of the sixth, as Reese reached on an infield single, stole second and third, and scored on a sacrifice fly by DiNardo.

The Bears though took the lead in the bottom of the seventh, scoring four times for a 5-3 lead. Smith opened the inning with a walk, followed by a two-run home run by Leonick off reliever Greg Dimmling, his first of the season. After a hit by pitch, Denten Neill stole second and Mike LaLuna walked. After a sac bunt, Christian Dienna doubled to center field, scoring Neill and LaLuna to give New York Tech the lead.

The Rams came back to tie the game in the top of the eighth, as DiNardo singled to left with Como following with a two-run home run to right center, his second of the season.

With the game tied at five in the ninth, where Denten Neill hit a walk-off solo home run to left, his first of the season, off reliever Angelo Ponte.

For Fordham, P.J. Como was 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, and four RBI, while Eric Reese was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three stolen bases. Rich Goulian also had a pair of hits and a stolen base for the Rams.

On the hill, Fordham allowed a total of four hits on the afternoon, but was not enough. Starter John Flanagan went the first three innings allowing an unearned run on one hit, while John Young pitched three scoreless innings.

The Rams return to action on Wednesday, April 2nd, as they play at Fairfield University, beginning at 3:30 PM.
