The Fordham baseball team used an eight-run rally and the long ball to complete a four-game sweep of the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights on Sunday afternoon, topping FDU, 9-6 in game one and 9-6 in seven innings in game two.
With the sweep, Fordham evens their record at 5-5, while FDU falls to 2-6.
In game one, Fairleigh Dickinson took the initial lead, as they loaded the bases with no outs on two walks and a single. Luis Rosario then grounded into a double play, which allowed Jeff Vincent to score for a 1-0 lead.
Fordham tied the game in the third, as Mike Mobbs walked, stole second, and scored on a single by Joe Russo.
FDU regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh, scoring twice to take a 3-1 lead. Vincent started the rally with a single, and was sacrificed to second. Rosario then hit a two-out triple to right center, scoring Vincent. John Paganotti then made it a two-run lead with an RBI-double, scoring Rosario.
The Knights extended the lead in the eighth on an RBI-single by Vincent, giving FDU a 4-1 lead.
Fordham then put together an eight-run rally in the top of the ninth, all with two outs. P.J. Como started the rally with a single to right, followed by a double to right center by Russo. Rich Goulian then connected for a two-run double to right center to make it a 4-3 game. Eric Reese then blooped a single into short left field, which allowed Goulian to score and tie the game. After Reese stole second, Chris Kaible singled to left center, scoring Reese from second.
Bobby DiNardo then blasted a two-run home run to left center, his second in as many days. The offense still wasn't done as Danny Leach tripled off the wall in right center, followed by a two-run home run to right by Ryan McCrann, giving Fordham a 9-4 lead.
FDU did load the bases in the ninth, but only got two runs off reliever Ryan Sheflott, as Fordham went on to win by a 9-6 final.
For Fordham, John Flanagan (1-1) picked up his first collegiate win in relief, allowing three runs in three innings. Starter Jake Rabinowitz went the first five innings, allowing just one run on one hit.
At the plate, Chris Kaible was 4-for-5 with an RBI, while Joe Russo and P.J. Como each had two hits.
In game two, Fordham grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, as Rob Iacono doubled to right center, moved to third on a passed ball, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Alex Kenny.
The Rams extended their lead to 5-0 in the fourth inning, picking up four runs on two hits and three FDU errors. McCrann started the inning with a single and stole second. DiNardo then reached on a throwing error and moved to second, while McCrann scored on the play. Iacono then reached on another error with DiNardo taking third. After DiNardo scored on a wild pitch, Ryan David crushed a two-run home run to straight away center for his first career home run.
The Rams pushed across their sixth run of the game in the fifth, as McCrann doubled, and scored on a double by Iacono.
The Knights picked up their first run in the bottom of the fifth on a fielder's choice, but Fordham tacked on three runs in the sixth inning to lead, 9-1, on an RBI-double by Goulian and a two-run double by DiNardo.
FDU scored four times in the bottom of the sixth to close the game to 9-5, highlighted by a two-run double by Rosario and an RBI-single by Bryan Dorsey.
The Knights threatened to tie the game in the seventh, getting an RBI-single by John Paganotti to close the game to 9-6, and then having the tying run come to the plate. Kaible though came on to get the final two outs and seal a 9-6 win by the Rams.
For Fordham, John Young (2-0) picked up his second win of the week, throwing the first five innings, giving up five runs on six hits. At the plate, Ryan David was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI, while Ryan McCrann was 2-for-4 with three runs scored.
The Fordham baseball team will next be in action on Wednesday, March 12th, as they play at Virginia Tech at 3:30 PM.
