Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Against Fairleigh Dickinson

Petersburg, Va. - After 27 runs, 30 hits, and close to eight hours of baseball, the Fordham baseball team swept a doubleheader from the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights by scores of 25-10 and 2-1 at the Petersburg Sports Complex in Petersburg, Va.

With the sweep, Fordham improves to 3-5 overall, while FDU falls to 2-4.

In game one, Fairleigh Dickinson got on the board immediately on a two-run double by Matt Maher, scoring Zachary Sand, who singled, and Luis Rosario, who reached on an error.

Fordham responded with five runs in the bottom half of the inning, as Danny Leach opened the inning with a single and Rich Goulian drew a walk. Eric Reese then stroked a single to score Leach. Ryan McCrann then belted a two-run single to right to make it, 3-2. Bobby DiNardo then blasted a two-run home run to center, his first of the season, to make it a 5-2 game.

The Rams made it 9-2 with four runs in the second inning, highlighted by a two-run single by Chris Kaible.

The Knights closed the Fordham lead to 9-4 in the third, highlighted by Zachary Sand's solo home run to left center, his first of the season.

The Rams came right back, scoring four times in the bottom half of the inning, capitalizing on two FDU errors. Fordham got runs on an RBI-single by Goulian, an RBI-double by McCrann, and two runs off two FDU errors.

Fordham then scored seven runs in the fourth and five in the fifth to pull out to a 25-4 lead.

FDU did score six runs in the ninth, but was not enough to top the Rams.

For Fordham, Tom Davis (1-0) picked up his first win of the season, allowing one earned run on eight hits in five innings of work. At the plate, P.J. Como was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI, while Ryan McCrann was 4-for-7 with three runs scored and three RBI. Chris Kaible also drove in four runs in the game, while Rich Goulian scored five runs.

In game two, Fordham took the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, as Mike Mobbs drew a bases loaded walk to force in Goulian.

The Knights tied the game in the top of the second, as Brett Lazar singled, moved to second on a single, and scored on a single by Jeff Vincent.

Fordham regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth with a single run. Rob Iacono led off with a walk and was sacrificed to second by Ryan David. Iacono then stole third, and scored on a misplayed pop up to right field.

The Rams made that lead hold up, as J.P. Mack (1-1) threw five innings of two-hit relief, striking out six to clinch the win. Starter Peter Kennelly threw the first four innings, allowing one run on five hits, striking out eight batters.

At the plate, Eric Reese was 2-for-2 with a double and a pair of walks, while Danny Leach was 2-for-4 with a double and a stolen base.

Fairleigh Dickinson's John Meadus (0-1) took the loss, allowing two runs on five hits, while striking out 14 batters.

The same two teams will meet up for another doubleheader on Sunday, March 9th, beginning at noon.
