It was a roller coaster day for the Fordham softball Rams on Sunday. After jumping out to a 7-1 lead in the third against 23rd-ranked Maryland, the Rams saw the Terps come back, taking a 12-7 lead with a five-run sixth. But the Rams responded with five runs in the top of the seventh, scoring all five runs with two outs, only to see Maryland score an unearned run in the bottom of the inning to hand Fordham a 13-12 loss at Robert Taylor Stadium.
With the loss, the Rams fall to 7-10 on the year while Maryland improves to 18-1.
Trailing 12-7 entering the seventh, Allison Storc led off with a double for the Rams and, one out later, Mary Beth Puccio walked. After a pop up for the second out of the inning, Megan Waldron singled to score Storc and move Puccio to third. Allison Twarowski followed with a single to plate Puccio and move Waldron to second and Melissa Andrews reached second on an error, allowing Puccio to score and Twarowski to advance to third. Jocelyn Dearborn then doubled to bring in both runners and knot the game at 12.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Niki Lau reached on an error for Maryland and Jenny Belak followed with a bunt single to send Lau to second. Fordham pitcher Beckah Wiggins then struck out Meghan Booth but Sarde Stewart connected for a single to deliver Lau with the game-winner.
The Rams jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first, thanks to a pair of two-run home runs. With one out, Andrews singled and she came around to score on Dearborn's team-leading fourth home run of the year. The next batter, Erin Fisher, walked and Storc brought her in with her first home run of the season.
The Terps picked up a run in the bottom of the first on a Stewart solo home run, but the Rams made it a 6-1 game with two more in the second. With one out, Waldron singled and, one out later, she stole second. Andrews brought in Waldron with a single, taking second on the throw to the plate, and she would score on a Dearborn single.
Fordham tacked on another run in the third, on a Waldron RBI single, to take a 7-1 lead before the Terps cut the Fordham advantage to 7-3 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning on Stewart's second home run of the game, a two-run shot.
Maryland tied the game with four runs in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run double from Julie Lofland, and then took a 12-7 lead with five more in the sixth, highlighted by a Booth two-run triple and a two-run double from Devon Williams.
Dearborn finished the game 4-for-5 with a home run and five RBI for the Rams while Waldron went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs and Andrews chipped in with two hits and three runs.
Fordham's game with Stony Brook, which was scheduled to follow the Maryland game, was cancelled.
