Softball Wins Two on Day Two of Maryland Invitational

College Park, Md. - It took an extra day as Fordham's first day of play at the 2008 Maryland Invitational was rained out, but the Rams made up for it on day two, defeating Seton Hall, 8-1, and Columbia, 4-1. With the wins, Fordham improves to 7-9 on the year.

In the first game of the day, the Rams jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead on Seton Hall in the bottom of the first as, with one out, Melissa Andrews singled and scored on a Jocelyn Dearborn double.

Fordham made it a 6-0 game with a five-run second, as the Rams belted out five hits in the frame. Allison Storc got things started with a walk and Jessica Weckenman doubled her to third. Storc then came in to score on a wild pitch, with Weckenman moving to third where she scored on a Samantha Pellechio single. Stephanie Mott followed with a bunt single, moving Pellechio to second, and, one out later, Andrews doubled to plate Pellechio. A Dearborn sacrifice fly brought in Mott with the fourth run and Erin Fisher capped the inning with a single to score Andrews.

The Pirates picked up a run in the fourth on a Leah Menichetti RBI single before Fordham closed out the scoring with a pair of runs in the fifth. Meghan Shager opened the Fordham fifth with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Weckenman then brought Shager in with a single, with Weckenman taking second when the ball was misplayed. Two outs later, Allison Twarowski delivered Weckenman with an RBI single.

Nicole Ayres (3-6) picked up the win for the Rams, throwing the first four innings, allowing three hits while striking out nine while Beckah Wiggins threw the final three innings, allowing one hit and fanning two.

Weckenman finished the first game 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and an RBI while Andrews was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

In the second game, the Rams again jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead as Twarowski led off the game with a single, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a Dearborn ground out.

Columbia tied the game in the second on an RBI double before the Rams took the lead for good with a two-run third. Andrews opened the Fordham third with a single and stole second. She then came around to score on Dearborn's team-leading third home run of the year.

Fordham added another run in the fifth when Andrews singled with one out and moved to second on an error. She then stole third and scored later in the inning on a Fisher sacrifice fly.

Wiggins (2-2) picked up the win on the mound for Fordham, throwing five innings of two-hit ball, striking out three, while Twarowski threw two innings of one-hit relief, striking out two.

Andrews was 2-for-4 with two runs in game two while Dearborn drove in three of the four Fordham runs.

The Rams will close out play at the Maryland Invitational on Sunday by taking on 23rd-ranked Maryland at 4:00 p.m. and Stony Brook at 6:00 p.m.
