Box Score

Bronx, N.Y. - Fordham's Allison Twarowski allowed one hit over five innings of work, while Jocelyn Dearborn knocked in three runs, as the Fordham Rams topped the Rhode Island Rams, 9-1, in five innings in the first game of an Atlantic 10 doubleheader at Bahoshy Field. In the night cap, Beckah Wiggins retired the first 16 batters of the game, while Twarowski drove in three runs, as Fordham completed the doubleheader sweep with a 6-2 win over Rhode Island.

With the sweep, Fordham improves to 10-17 overall, 2-2 in the Atlantic 10, while Rhode Island falls to 7-16 on the year, 1-3 in the conference.

In game one, Rhode Island cracked the scoreboard first as Darci Borden was hit by a pitch, sacrificed to second, and scored on a double by Melissa Wilson.

Fordham responded with three runs in the bottom of the first, courtesy of four consecutive hits. Melissa Andrews started the rally with a one-out single, followed by a single from Mary Beth Puccio. Allison Storc then doubled down the left field line, scoring Andrews. Jocelyn Dearborn then knocked out a two-run single, scoring Puccio and Storc. Fordham then picked up two more runs in the second, on an RBI-single by Puccio and a Rhode Island error.

Fordham then closed out the game with four runs in the fourth to go up, 9-1. Samantha Pellechio started the frame with a single, and was pinch run for by Sarah Campbell. Twarowski and Andrews followed with consecutive singles to load the bases with no outs. Puccio then connected on an RBI-single, scoring Campbell. The Rams then got a run on a wild pitch, scoring Twarowski. After a walk to Storc reloaded the bases, Dearborn picked up an RBI-single, scoring Andrews, but Puccio would be thrown out at the plate, leaving Fordham up 8-1. The Rams later scored another run, as Storc moved to third on a ground out, and scored on a passed ball.

Despite three errors in the seventh, Twarowski was able to keep Rhode Island scoreless to invoke the eight-run mercy rule. Twarowski (4-5) allowed one run on one hit with two strikeouts to earn the win, while scoring two runs at the plate. Jocelyn Dearborn was 3-for-3 with three RBI, while Mary Beth Puccio was 3-for-3 with two RBI.

In game two, Fordham opened with a 4-0 lead by the second inning. The Rams got a single run in the first on an RBI-double by Andrews, while Twarowski hit a three-run double with the bases loaded in the second.

Fordham's Beckah Wiggins was dominant in the game, retiring the first 16 batters she faced. Her bid for a perfect game and a shutout though was foiled in the sixth, as a hot shot to the right side by Shauna Robbins was stopped by Fordham's Jessica Weckenman, but Robbins just beat Weckenman to the bag for an infield hit. Wiggins then issued three walks, the last to Wilson, forcing in a run.

Fordham scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to grab a 6-1 lead. Megan Waldron opened the inning with a walk and moved to third on a double by Storc. Waldron then scored on a ground out by Meghan Shager, but an errant throw on the play allowed Storc to score as well.

Despite allowing a run in the seventh, Fordham was able to get a double play with the bases loaded to close out a 6-2 victory.

Wiggins (3-5) allowed two runs on three hits with five strikeouts to record the win, while Nicole Ayres recorded the final three outs for her first save of the season. At the plate, Twarowski was 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI, while Andrews and Shager each had two hits and an RBI.

The Fordham softball team will next be in action on Thursday, March 27th, as they play at Wagner College for a 3:30 PM doubleheader.
