Softball Drops Atlantic 10 Opener To UMass In Two Tight Games

Bronx, N.Y. - Massachusetts' Bailey Sanders threw a complete game two-hitter at Bahoshy Field this afternoon, as the Minutewomen downed Fordham, 1-0, to complete an Atlantic 10 softball doubleheader sweep of the Rams. In game one, Massachusetts rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh to top Fordham, 4-2.

With the sweep, Fordham falls to 8-17 on the season, 0-2 in the Atlantic 10, while Massachusetts improves to 12-11 overall, 2-0 in the league.

In game one, Fordham opened with a 2-0 lead in the first inning, as Allison Twarowski opened the inning with a walk and stole second. After a pair of outs, Mary Beth Puccio singled through the right side, scoring Twarowski from second. Erin Fisher then reached on an infield single, putting runners at first and second. Allison Storc then singled to right, scoring Puccio from second.

Massachusetts cut the lead to 2-1 in the fifth with an unearned run on a sacrifice fly by Samantha Salato.

The game stayed at 2-1 until the top of the seventh, where the Minutewomen scored three times to take a 4-2 lead. Stacy Cullington led off with a double down the left field line. Whitney Mollica then singled to left, moving Cullington to third, while Mollica advanced to second on a throw. After a fly out, Salato doubled to right, scoring Cullington and Mollica. Jessica Serio then followed with the third double of the inning to score Salato for a 4-2 edge.

Massachusetts' Brandice Balschmiter (8-6) was able to hold Fordham back in the seventh, allowing two runs on four hits with six strikeouts to pick up the win.

Allison Twarowski (4-5) got the loss for Fordham, giving up three earned runs in 6 1/3 innings of work with three strikeouts. At the plate, Mary Beth Puccio was 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Allison Storc was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

In game two, the only offense of the game came in the top of the second, as Sarah Reeves connected for a solo home run to left center, her first of the season, giving Massachusetts a 1-0 lead.

Fordham threatend to tie the game in the bottom half of the second, as Storc singled through the left side and Jessica Weckenman drew a walk with two outs. Stephanie Mott though grounded out to third to end the inning.

Massachusetts' Bailey Sanders (4-5) allowed just two hits in the game to go with five walks and two strikeouts for the win.

Fordham's Beckah Wiggins (1-5) was the hard luck loser, pitching 6 2/3 innings, allowing one run on six hits with two strikeouts. Storc and Melissa Andrews accounted for the only two hits for Fordham.

The Fordham softball team will next be in action on Saturday, March 22nd, as they host Rhode Island for an Atlantic 10 doubleheader, beginning at noon.
