St. Bonaventure's Jim Britton threw eight shutout innings, allowing just two hits and struck out 10 batters, as the Bonnies snapped the Fordham Rams' 10-game win streak with a 4-0 win at Houlihan Park on Thursday.
With the loss, Fordham is now 10-6 overall, 0-1 in the Atlantic 10, while St. Bonaventure improves to 7-5 overall, 1-0 in the conference. The loss also snapped Fordham's 15-game home win streak.
St. Bonaventure took advantage for three Fordham errors on the afternoon, which eventually led to most of St. Bonaventure's scoring.
In the first inning, Kevin Suminski started the game with a single, and moved to second on a sacrifice. After an infield single by Randy Moley put runners at first and third, Moley stole second, but the throw went errant, allowing Suminski to score.
Fordham threatened to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning, as Eric Reese singled with two outs. He then stole second, and moved to third on a throwing error. The Rams however could not get the run across, as Chris Kaible flied out to right to end the inning.
The score stayed at 1-0 until the seventh, as St. Bonaventure scored three runs to take a 4-0 lead. Tristan Mulcahy opened the frame with a double to right center. Ricky Pillitteri then sacrificed Mulcahy to third, but the throw to first went errant, allowing Mulchay to score with Pillitteri taking second. After another sacrifice, Pilletteri scored on a ground out by Jesse Bosnik to make it 3-0. Moley then reached on a ground rule double, and scored on a single by Anthony Randich.
Jim Britton (2-1) kept the Rams' offense in check all game, as he allowed just one runner to third, giving up just two hits and striking out ten.
Fordham's Tom Davis (2-1) took the loss, despite a solid pitching performance. He threw eight innings, allowing just one earned run on seven hits with five strikeouts. Fordham managed just three hits on the afternoon, one each by Eric Reese, Joe Russo, and Danny Leach.
The same two teams will match up again on Friday at 11:00 AM at Houlihan Park.
