Following a no-hitter yesterday, ECU's Brooke Swann allowed two runs on four hits, while Erin St. Ledger and Kaui Tom collected three hits each, as ECU defeated the Fordham Rams, 6-2, in the championship game of the ECU Pirate Clash in Greenville, N.C.
With the loss, Fordham goes to 5-9 on the season, while East Carolina moves to 16-5.
East Carolina opened with a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, picking up an unearned run. Tom started the inning with a single, and moved to second on a ground out. Jessica Johnson then reached on an error, allowing Tom to score.
East Carolina then opened up a 4-0 lead, as Tom connected for a three-run home run off Fordham starter Nicole Ayres.
Fordham made it 4-2 in the bottom half of the inning, as the Rams loaded the bases on walks to Mary Beth Puccio and Samantha Pellechio and a single by Meghan Shager. Jessica Weckenman then connected for a two-run single, scoring Puccio and Pellechio.
East Carolina tacked on two insurance runs in the seventh, going on to the 6-2 victory.
For Fordham, Jessica Weckenman was 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Allison Twarowski and Meghan Shager each had a hit. Nicole Ayres fell to 2-6 on the season, allowing three earned runs on seven hits in four innings of work. She also struck out five batters.
The Fordham softball team will next be in action on Tuesday, March 4th, as they play at home for the first time against Iona College. The doubleheader will start at 3:30 PM with both games being carried on wfuv.org.
