Greenville, N.C. -
The Fordham softball team improved to 3-1 at the ECU Pirate Clash on Saturday as they picked up a 3-2 win over Liberty and an 11-6 win over host East Carolina. The Rams will be the #1 seed in bracket play and play in the championship game at 1:00 PM against either East Carolina or Towson.
With the two wins, Fordham has now won three straight improving their record to 5-8.
In game one, Melissa Andrews was 4-for-4 at the plate, while Allison Twarowski threw a complete game six-hitter as Fordham topped the Liberty Flames, 3-2.
Fordham started the scoring in the third inning, getting out to a 2-0 lead. With two outs, Twarowski drew a walk, followed by a single by Andrews. After advancing a base on a passed ball, both runners came home on an error by the Liberty shortstop.
The Rams made it 3-0 in the fifth as Fordham opened the inning with runners at first and second on singles by Andrews and Jocelyn Dearborn. After a force out and walk, Allison Storc hit a fly ball to center, which was misplayed, allowing Dearborn to score from third.
Liberty picked up a single run in the sixth, and then threatened to tie the game in the seventh. After an RBI-double by Keely McMillon made it 3-2, Twarowski got a strikeout and a ground out to short to end game and give Fordham the win.
In game two, Twarowski had two hits, three runs scored, and recorded the win in relief, as Fordham posted an 11-6 win over East Carolina.
Fordham again opened with a 2-0 lead in the first, as Twarowski and Andrews led off with back-to-back singles. Things then got scary as Dearborn was hit in the face by a pitch, which loaded the bases. She would walk off the field under her own power, and should be fine. Erin Fisher then doubled, scoring Twarowski and Andrews.
East Carolina responded with three runs in the second, highlighted by RBI-doubles from Vanessa Moreno and Angel Barrella.
Fordham then erupted for seven runs in the fifth inning to take a 9-3 lead. The Rams had four hits and two stolen bases in the inning, which included RBI-singles by Andrews and Mary Beth Puccio and steals from Andrews and Megan Waldron.
ECU came right back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning, making it a 9-6 game, but Fordham scored once in the final two innings to seal an 11-6 win.
For Fordham, Mary Beth Puccio and Melissa Andrews were both 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Allison Storc also had two hits. Twarowski (2-1) got the win in relief, pitching the final three innings, allowing one run on four hits, while at the plate, she had two hits and three runs scored.
