Clearwater, Fla. -
The Fordham University softball squad wrapped up play at the 2008 USF Under Armor Showcase on Sunday by dropping a pair of games, falling to Purdue, 3-2, and South Florida, 7-0, at the E.C. Moore Softball Complex. With the losses, the Rams fall to 8-15 on the year.
In the first game, Purdue took a 1-0 lead in the first as Candace Curtis opened the game reaching on an error and, one out later, took second on a Katie Mitchell sacrifice bunt. Curtis then came around to score on a Kelsey Haupert double.
The Boilermakers made it a 3-0 game with a pair of runs in the sixth when Haupert opened the inning with a walk before Amy Butcher came on to pinch run for her. Ashley Barr then reached second when her sacrifice bunt was misplayed with Butcher scoring on the play. One out later, Barr took third on a fly out and she scored on a Suzie Rzegocki single.
The Rams made it a one-run game in the home half of the frame as Mary Beth Puccio opened the inning reaching on an error before being forced at second on an Allison Twarowski fielder's choice. Twarowski then advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a Melissa Andrews single. After Andrews stole second, Twarowski scored on a Jocelyn Dearborn ground out and Andrews came in on an Allison Storc single.
Twarowski (3-3) took the loss on the mound for the Rams, throwing six innings of six-hit ball, allowing three runs, none earned, while striking out four.
In the nightcap, South Florida's Capri Catalano held the Rams to just three hits, while striking out seven, to lead the Bulls to the 7-0 win.
Fordham threatened in the top of the first, loading the bases with two outs on two walks and a fielder's choice. But Catalano struck out Jessica Weckenman to end the inning.
South Florida jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first as Britta Giddens opened the inning getting hit by a pitch and then moved to second on an illegal pitch. One out later, Giddens stole third where she would score on a Kit Dunbar infield single. A JoJo Medina infield single moved Dunbar to second before she was forced at third on an Alison Savarese fielder's choice. The two runners then moved up a base on a wild pitch before Courtney Mosch delivered both of them with a double.
The Bulls then took a commanding 7-0 lead with a four-run fourth, highlighted by a Medina three-run home run.
In the Fordham sixth, the Rams got the first two hitters on as Puccio doubled to lead off and Stephanie Mott walked. Weckenman then moved both runners up a base with a ground out but Samantha Pellechio popped up and Erin Fisher struck out to end the threat.
The Rams will next be in action on Wednesday, March 19th, as they host Seton Hall for a doubleheader on Bahoshy Field beginning at 3:30 p.m.
