The Fordham University softball squad had two things to deal with today at the USF Under Armor Showcase, a nationally-ranked team and the weather. Unfortunately for the Rams, both the ranked team and the weather won out as Fordham (7-13) fell to tenth-ranked LSU, 8-3, in the first game of the day and then saw its second game against Purdue postponed due to the rain. The Purdue game will be rescheduled along with the other tournament games that were postponed on Friday.
In the LSU game, the Tigers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Dee Dee Henderson led off with a single, stole second and third, and scored on a wild pitch.
The Rams took a 2-1 lead in the second when, with one out, Megan Waldron singled and came around to score on an Allison Storc home run, her second of the year.
The game remained a 2-1 contest until the fourth when the Tigers picked up a pair of runs to take a 3-2 lead. Rachel Mitchell and Killian Roessner led off with back-to-back doubles to tie the game at two and Tiffany Shaw, who came in to pinch run for Roessner, came around to score later in the inning on a Casey Fraile single.
LSU then scored three more in the fifth on just one hit as the Tigers took advantage of three Fordham errors. Shannon Stein led off the frame with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jessica Mouse walked to put runners on first and second and Jazz Jackson loaded the bases when she reached base as her sacrifice bunt was misplayed. A Mitchell sacrifice fly plated Stein and moved Mouse to third. After Jackson stole second, Mouse scored when a Roessner ground ball was misplayed, with Jackson taking third on the play. Tayl'r Hollis then reached on the third Fordham error of the inning, allowing Jackson to score and LSU to take a 6-3 lead.
The Rams cut the deficit to three, 6-3, in the home half of the fifth as Samantha Pellechio led off with a single, taking second on the play when the ball was misplayed. Two outs later she scored when Melissa Andrews reached on an error.
The Tigers closed out the scoring with two runs in the sixth on a Mitchell two-run single.
Allison Twarowski (3-3) took the loss on the mound for the Rams, allowing seven hits and six runs, four earned, over the first four innings.
The Rams are scheduled to face Oklahoma State on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and South Florida at 6:00 p.m. along with the make-up of the Purdue game.
