Softball Drops Pair of Games To Radford & Penn State

Clearwater, Fla. - The Fordham softball team began its southern swing in Florida today, taking on Radford and Penn State at the Moore Complex. The trip didn't start the way Fordham (7-12) would have liked, as the Rams fell to Radford, 6-4, and Penn State, 2-1.

In game one, Fordham opened a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, as Allison Twarowski led off with a double, was sacrificed to second, and scored on a double by Erin Fisher.

Radford took a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the first on a two-run home run by Cassie Rhodes to center.

Fordham tied the game in the third, as Twarowski walked, stole second, and scored on a single by Fisher.

The Rams then scored twice in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead. Fordham put a pair of runners on base as Allison Storc was hit by a pitch, while Megan Waldron drew a walk. Mary Beth Puccio then doubled down the left field line, scoring Storc and Waldron.

Radford came right back to tie the game at four in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run triple by Jennifer Everhart.

Radford then scored once in the fifth on an RBI-double by Madden, and once in the sixth on a passed ball to close out a 6-4 victory.

For Fordham, Allison Twarowski (2-2) took the loss, allowing two earned runs on five hits, while going 1-for-3 with two runs scored at the plate. Erin Fisher was also 2-for-3 with two RBI.

In the second game of the day, Penn State opened the scoring in the first with a single run. Pitcher Ashley Esparza singled with one out, and moved to third on a single by Danielle Kinley. Hollee Haines then singled to right to score Esparza.

Penn State made it 2-0 in the fifth, as Sam Hovanec singled to center, was sacrificed to second, and scored on a single by Esparza.

Fordham closed the gap to 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth, as Jessica Weckenman opened the frame with a double. Meghan Shager then singled to left center, moving Weckenman to third. After an out and a stolen base by Shager, Melissa Andrews doubled to right center, scoring Weckenman, but Shager was thrown out at the plate on the play.

Fordham did get a base runner in the bottom of the seventh, as Waldron opened the inning with a single, but the Rams could not get the runner past first, falling by a 2-1 final.

For Fordham, Beckah Wiggins (2-4) took the loss, allowing two runs on seven hits in five innings, while Allison Twarowski allowed three hits in two scoreless innings of relief. At the plate, Twarowski was 2-for-4, while Jessica Weckenman was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.

The Fordham softball team will next be in action March 16-18, as they compete at the Under Armour/USF Invitational in Clearwater, Fla. Fordham opens play on Friday against tenth-ranked LSU at 11:00 AM, and then faces Purdue at 6:00 PM.
