Box Score
Bronx, N.Y. -
Rhode Island's Safi Mojidi scored a team-high 13 points, including the game-winning jumper with 2.7 seconds left, as the Rhode Island Rams defeated the Fordham Rams, 57-55, in front of a single-game record crowd for a women's basketball game at the Rose Hill Gym this afternoon.
Fordham hosted the Second "Rams' School Day", as the Rose Hill Gym was packed with 1,612 Bronx school children, setting a new single game attendance mark for a Fordham women's basketball game. The previous mark was 1,529, set on the first Rams' School Day last year. The crowd of school children enjoyed an outstanding game which came down to the final few possessions.
Rhode Island took the early advantage, as they built up a six point lead, 16-10, at the halfway point of the first half. Megan Mahoney then scored seven straight points for Fordham, followed by a Beth Troutt three-pointer to knot the game at 20. A fast break basket by Mahoney gave Fordham a 22-20 lead, but Amanda McGrew hit two jumpers, while Safi Mojidi netted a pair of free throws to close out the half, leaving URI up, 26-22.
Neither team could pull away in the second half, as the largest lead at any time was six points. The score was tied on eight occasions in the second half with Fordham pulling ahead, 53-51, on a jumper by Kassie Humphries with 4:29 left in regulation. After exchanging baskets, Rhode Island knotted the game at 55 on a Mojidi jumper with 1:48 to go. After misses by both teams, Fordham had the ball with 27 seconds left, but Humphries' inbounds pass was picked up by a URI player. That turnover led to Mojidi banking a shot off the glass and in for the go-ahead basket with 2.7 seconds left. Fordham again had trouble inbounding the ball, as it was deflected away to run out the clock.
For Fordham, Megan Mahoney notched her fourth straight 20-point game with 22 points and five rebounds, while Annie Zopf netted 11 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Kassie Humphries also had 10 points and three rebounds for the Rams.
The Fordham women's basketball team will next be in action on Saturday, February 9th, as they host Atlantic 10 opponent, the University of Dayton, beginning at 1:00 PM.
