Final Stats

Greenville, N.C. - After dropping the first game on the day to UNC Greensboro, 6-0, on the first day of play at the 2008 Holiday Inn Select Pirate Classic at East Carolina University, the Fordham Rams used the strong pitching of freshman Beckah Wiggins to win their second game, 2-0.

With the split, the Rams are now 3-8 on the young season.

In game two, Wiggins (1-2) threw a complete game two-hitter, striking out five, to pick up her first collegiate win. She allowed just six base runners in the game, with only one of those runners advancing to third.

The Rams got all the runs they would need in the first as Allison Twarowski led off the home half of the first with a double and came around to score when Melissa Andrews reached when her sacrifice bunt attempt was misplayed. Jocelyn Dearborn then sacrificed Andrews to third before Erin Fisher walked and stole second. A walk to Allison Storc loaded the bases and Andrews would come home a fielder's choice ground out from Samantha Pellechio. A single by Wiggins reloaded the bases but Sarah Campbell grounded out to end the inning.

Wiggins allowed three base runners through the first three innings before Stephanie Fudurich led off the Towson fourth with a walk. One out later, she moved to second on a ground out and then took third on a single from Stefanie Streets. But Wiggins got Kelly Ebner to foul out to end the Tigers' threat.

In game one, Fordham fell to the UNC-Greensboro Spartans, 6-0.

With the game scoreless through three innings, the Spartans put three runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Mary Vercoe opened the frame with a single, and was pinch run for by Kayla Hensley. After a sacrifice, Whitney Sirois singled, moving Hensley to third. Kristen Gabel then lifted a sacrifice fly to center for the 1-0 lead. Emily Akiyama followed with a two-run home run, her first of the season, giving the Spartans a 3-0 advantage.

The Spartans tacked on three more runs in the six, two of which were unearned. Lyndsay Mouse had the big-hit of the inning with an RBI-double, which made it 4-0.

The Rams offense was held in check by Amber Harrell (5-4), as she allowed just six hits in the game, striking out eight. Only one Ram reached third base in the contest.

Nicole Ayres (2-4) took the loss, throwing 3 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits with three strikeouts. At the plate, Stephanie Mott was 2-for-3 to lead the Rams.

The Rams will continue play at the tournament on Saturday, facing Liberty at 10:00 AM and East Carolina at 12:00 PM.
