Softball Falls in Palm Springs Classic Finale

Palm Springs, Calif. - The Fordham University softball team closed out the 2008 Palm Springs Classic with a 9-1 loss to 18th-ranked Ohio State on Sunday afternoon, closing out the tournament with an 0-4 record and a loss to the US National Team.

Ohio State started the scoring in the first, getting three runs across on RBI-singles from Brittany Goodchild, Sam Marder and Karisa Medrano.

The Buckeyes made it 4-0 in the second with an unearned run on an RBI-single from Marder.

After Ohio State went up 5-0 in the third, Fordham got on the board in the fourth to make it 5-1. Mary Beth Puccio ripped a hit to right, that bounced by the right fielder, leaving Puccio on third with a triple. One out later, Jessica Weckenman lifted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Puccio.

Ohio State tacked on two more runs in the sixth and seventh innings, capitalizing on four Fordham errors, to win by a 9-1 margin.

For Fordham, Nicole Ayres (2-4) took the loss, allowing four earned runs and striking out five in 2 2/3 innings.

The Rams will next be in action on Friday, February 29th as they travel to Greenville, North Carolina, to participate in the Holiday Inn Express Pirate Classic. Fordham will open the tournament by facing UNC-Greensboro on Friday at 10:00 AM and Towson on Friday at 12:00 PM.
