Xavier's Ta'Shia Phillips notched a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while April Phillips had 13 points and eight rebounds off the bench, as the Musketeers bested the Fordham Rams, 65-42, at the Rose Hill Gym.
Over the first four minutes, the teams played relatively even with Xavier leading 11-8 after Fordham's Takita Earl hit a jump hook in the lane. Xavier then reeled off 12 straight points, capped by a three-point play by April Phillips, to lead 23-8. After Fordham made it a 13-point game, 26-13, on a three-pointer by Annie Zopf, Xavier went on an 18-2 run to push their lead to 42-15, and would lead at the break, 48-20.
At the half, Xavier shot 58.3% from the field, while out rebounding Fordham, 29-9. Xavier's Ta'Shia Phillips had 13 first half points, helping Xavier to a 26-8 points in the paint advantage. Fordham's top scorer at the break was Kassie Humphries with six points.
Xavier got the lead to 30 midway through the second half at 61-31, but Fordham put together a strong rally to close out the game. Megan Mahoney hit a pair of three-pointers and a lay-up, as the Rams outscored the Musketeers, 11-4, over the final ten minutes and fall by a final score of 65-42.
For Fordham, Megan Mahoney scored a team-high 11 points, while Kassie Humphries added 10 points, six rebounds, and two blocks.
The Fordham women's basketball team will next be in action on Saturday, February 23rd, as they play at Atlantic 10 opponent, Temple University, beginning at 1:00 PM, in the first half of a basketball doubleheader.
