La Salle's Carlene Hightower scored a game-high 30 points, connecting on 11-of-14 from the field, including six three-pointers, as the Explorers knocked off the Fordham Rams, 84-67, at Tom Gola Arena in Philadelphia, Pa.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 0-25 overall, 0-10 in the Atlantic 10, while La Salle improves to 11-14 on the year, 3-7 in the league.
La Salle started out the game on fire from three-point range, as Carlene Hightower hit three three-pointers, while Jamie Walsh also hit one, as La Salle grabbed a 16-6 lead. The Explorers extended the lead to 13, 26-13, as Walsh hit a pair of jumpers with 9:24 remaining in the half. Fordham put together a quick 7-0 spurt to close within 31-21, as Annie Zopf hit a three, followed by baskets from Kristina Bell and Takita Earl. Hightower though continued her hot shooting with a pair of jumpers, giving La Salle a 39-25 lead with 3:51 to go. La Salle then closed out the half on a buzzer beater three-pointer by Ashley Gale, taking a 48-28 lead into halftime.
La Salle shot 62% from the floor in the first half, while also holding a 23-11 rebounding margin. La Salle's Carlene Hightower led all scorers with 17 points and four rebounds, while Morgan Robertson added 11 points and four boards. Fordham was led by Takita Earl's eight points and four rebounds.
Hightower continued the Explorers' hot shooting, hitting her fourth three-pointer of the game to give them a 59-37 lead with 15:36 left. La Salle pushed the lead to 29, as Hightower canned her sixth three-pointer of the afternoon, giving her 30 points on the day, her second 30-point game of the season. Fordham got the lead under 20, as Bell scored nine straight points, cutting the La Salle lead to 79-62. Fordham closed the gap to 13, 79-66, after two straight makes from Megan Mahoney with under two minutes to go, but La Salle closed the game by making five of six free throws to win by 17.
For Fordham, Kristina Bell scored a career-high 17 points and five rebounds, while Takita Earl scored a season-high 10 points to go with eight rebounds. Annie Zopf added 11 points, while Megan Mahoney had 10 points.
Besides Hightower, La Salle's Morgan Robertson had 13 points and seven rebounds, while Jamie Walsh added 12 points, six assists, and four rebounds.
The Fordham women's basketball team will next be in action on Wednesday, February 20th, as they host the Xavier University Musketeers at 7:00 PM at the Rose Hill Gym.
