Bronx, N.Y. - On Alumni Day, the Fordham women's basketball team gave all their former players a show, as Fordham's Randall Hurst scored two of her career-high 27 points with 6.8 seconds remaining in regulation to give the Fordham Rams a 55-53 win over Wofford College at the Rose Hill Gym on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Fordham evens its record at 4-4 on the year, while Wofford goes to 1-6 overall.
Fordham began the game well, getting out to an 11-6 lead, capped a basket by Kristina Bell and a three-pointer from Becky Peters. Wofford then tied the game at 11, and eventually grabbed a four-point lead, 20-16, on a three-point shot from Liz Miller. The Terriers then extended their lead to eight, 26-18, with five minutes to play on a layup by Summer Nichols. The Rams however went on an 11-2 run to close out the period, which included a three-pointer by Bell and four points each from Kyara Weeks and Randall Hurst, to bring Fordham ahead, 29-28, at the break.
At the half, both teams were rather stingy on defense, holding each other to nine and ten baskets, respectively. Fordham though took advantage in the turnover department, turning nine Wofford turnovers into 15 points.
Play was extremely tight in the second half, with neither leading by more than four points. Hurst would keep Fordham ahead, scoring nine of Fordham's 11 points over the first nine minutes of the half to give the Rams a 40-37 lead. The lead would go up to four on a layup by Annie Zopf, but stayed at that four-point margin until the final two minutes.
With Fordham leading 52-48, Kelly Dwyer hit a three-pointer for Wofford with 1:42 to go to bring the Terriers within one. After a Wofford foul, Peters was sent to the line for a one-and-one, hitting the first and missing the second, which put Fordham's lead at 53-51 with 37 seconds left. Mahagony Williams then tied the game at 53 on a layup with 26 seconds to go.
After a Fordham timeout, the Rams used some quick passes, the last by Bell, which found Hurst under the basket for a lay-up that bounced in giving Fordham a 55-53 lead. After a foul left Wofford with two seconds on the clock, Dwyer took a last chance three-point shot that fell short, giving Fordham their fourth win of the season.
In the win, Fordham was led by the trio of Randall Hurst, Kristina Bell and Takita Earl. Hurst finished with a career-high 27 points, shooting 11-for-21 from the field, to go with nine rebounds, while Earl also just missed a double-double with nine points, 13 rebounds, and two blocks. Bell filled up the entire stat sheet in this game with five points, seven rebounds, four assists, five steals, and two blocks.
The Fordham women's basketball team will next be in action on Wednesday, December 10th, as they play at Iona College, beginning at 7:30 PM.
