Volleyball Extends Win Streak To Five With Victory Over Charlotte

Bronx, N.Y. - Just a half game out of the final Atlantic 10 playoff spot with three matches to play, Saturday's match-up against Charlotte had huge implications for the Fordham volleyball team. The Rams followed with outstanding performances from Jolanda Gunning-Snowden and Kailee May to earn a 3-1 victory over the 49ers at the Rose Hill Gym. Final set scores were 19-25, 25-22, 25-23, and 25-19.

With the win, Fordham extends their win streak to five, improving to 17-14 overall, 5-6 in the Atlantic 10, while Charlotte fell to 10-17 overall, 1-10 in league play.

In set one, the 49ers were the more aggressive team earning a 25-19 win, as they held Fordham to a .000 hitting percentage and had four team blocks.

In set two, the 49ers stayed ahead of the Rams, 12-9, before Fordham reeled off three straight points to tie the set, highlighted by a Kailee May service ace. Charlotte regained the lead at 17-16, but May again responded for Fordham with two straight kills to give Fordham the lead, 18-17. Fordham extended their lead to 20-17 on two Charlotte errors, and held on to the three-point advantage to win the set, 25-22.

With the match knotted at one set each, the third set was even at 13 before the 49ers scored four of the next five points to grab a 17-14 lead. Charlotte extended that lead to four points, 19-15, but Fordham came all the way back to tie the set at 21, getting two kills from Jolanda Gunning-Snowden in that stretch. Fordham scored two more points on a kill from Christi Griffiths and a block from Griffiths and Gunning-Snowden to take a 23-21 lead. After an attack error gave Fordham set point, Gunning-Snowden closed out the set with a kill for a 25-23 final score.

In the fourth set, Fordham once again came back from an early deficit, going down 11-9. The Rams then scored five straight points, two on kills by Katie Wells and three on kills from Gunning-Snowden. The 49ers would close to within one, but Fordham did not relinquish the lead, winning the final set by six, capped by a Gunning-Snowden kill.

For Fordham, Jolanda Gunning-Snowden posted a season-high 16 kills on the night, while Kailee May had a double-double with 12 kills and 17 digs. Katie Wells added eight kills and three blocks with Kim Capicotto and Bianca Hernandez both having a pair of service aces.

Charlotte was led by Kara Raker, who finished with 14 kills and five blocks.

The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Sunday, November 9th, as they host George Washington University, beginning at 12:00 PM.
