After going five sets in the previous two match-ups this season, the Fordham volleyball hoped the third time would be the charm against the George Washington Colonials having dropped both of those matches. The Colonials however had other ideas, hitting .366 as a team to post a three-set sweep of the Rams in the Atlantic 10 Championship, held at Chafeitz Pavilion in St. Louis, Missouri. Final set scores were 25-22, 25-19, and 25-7.
With the loss, Fordham ends the season at 18-16 overall, while George Washington improves to 19-10 overall and advances to day two of the championship.
In set one, Fordham opened with a 4-1 lead, highlighted by two kills from Katie Wells. The Rams either held the lead or were tied with the Colonials until kills from Abby Syverson and Leah Hill gave them a 14-12 lead. Down 21-18, the Rams rallied to tie the set at 21 behind a Colonial error, and a kill and block from Jolanda Gunning-Snowden. After exchanging points, the Colonials got kills from Liz Moult and Hill, as well as a Fordham error to take the set, 25-22. George Washington hit .341 in the set, making just three errors, while Fordham hit .297 as a team.
In set two, the Colonials jumped out to a 6-2 lead before Fordham scored four straight points to tie the score at six, capped by a block by Christi Griffiths and a kill from Gunning-Snowden. George Washington then regained their four-point lead at 15-11 on a kill from Moult. The Colonials continued their offensive attack getting their lead to seven, 23-16, on a kill by Katie Butz, and eventually won by a 25-19 score.
Set three turned on the Rams very early. With George Washington leading 5-3, the Colonials scored nine straight points, five of which came on Fordham errors, to pull out to a 14-3 advantage. The Colonials continued to stretch their lead, hitting .526 in the final set to go on to a 25-7 win.
For Fordham, Jolanda Gunning-Snowden was the top hitter with nine kills and two blocks, while Katie Wells and Christi Griffiths each had six kills. Katherine Burrell ended the match with 20 assists, seven digs and three kills with Kailee May adding five kills and eight digs.
George Washington hit an impressive .366 for the match, led by Katie Butz's 14 kills with Liz Moult and Leah Hill each having 10 kills.
