Bronx, N.Y. -
The Fordham men's soccer team celebrated Senior Day on Sunday at Jack Coffey Field, but the Massachusetts Minutemen spoiled the day with a 2-1 victory over the Rams.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 8-7-1 overall, 4-3 in the Atlantic 10, while Massachusetts improves to 7-6-3 on the year, 5-1-1 in the league.
The play was slow to start, but Fordham almost scored in the 24th minute. Grant Kerr shot the ball from 20 yards out, that hooked toward the top left of the goal, but hit the crossbar to keep the game scoreless.
The Rams then got an unlucky in the 42nd minute. UMass' Ben Arikian took a kick from 40 yards out, that Fordham's Steve Woicik tried to head away, but ended up in the Fordham goal for an own goal.
The Minutemen then made it 2-0 early in the second half. Arikian again was involved as his corner kick was headed into the net by Sam DeNormandie for his first goal of the season.
The Rams attempted to claw their way back into the contest in the 81st minute, as they cut the lead to 2-1. Off a Sam Jolly corner kick, John Pardini headed the ball to Brett Heyder, who headed it home for his second goal of the season.
Fordham had one final chance to tie the game on a shot by Kerr in the 87th minute, but Zack Simmons made one of six saves on the afternoon to preserve the 2-1 advantage.
For Fordham, Ryan Meara made five saves on the afternoon with Simmons having six for UMass. Fordham's Steve Franchini and UMass' Chris Brown were also credited with one defender save each.
The Fordham men's soccer team will next be in action on Friday, November 7th, when they play at Temple University, beginning at 2:00 PM.
