Bronx, N.Y. - For first impressions, Fordham junior Randall Hurst gave a strong one, scoring a team-high 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting in the women's basketball opener against Princeton on Friday. Unfortunately, that effort was not enough, as Princeton shot close to 60% from the field in the second half to pull out a 69-57 win over the Rams at the Rose Hill Gym.
Fordham (0-1) had an outstanding start to the contest as Annie Zopf nailed a couple of early three-point shots to give Fordham a 13-7 lead. After Princeton (1-0) closed to within two, 19-17, the Rams went on a 10-0 run over a four-minute span to grab a 29-17 lead with 2:29 remaining in the first half. Randall Hurst scored six points over the stretch with a jumper by Alexandria Zamora capping the run.
The Rams eventually took an 11-point lead into halftime, 32-21, behind 14 first half points from Hurst. Fordham shot 50% from the field in the first half (12-24), while the defense limited Princeton to 6-of-27 shooting (22.2%).
In the second half, Takita Earl scored the first basket to give Fordham their largest lead of the contest at 13 points, 34-21. The Rams remained up double digits at the 13:55 mark, 43-32, as Zopf hit her third three-pointer of the game. Princeton however put together an eight-point spurt, capped by a fast break lay-up by Whitney Downs, to pull within three, 43-40 with 10:13 remaining.
The Rams boosted the lead back to six, 50-44, on a lay-up by Hurst, but Princeton came up with a 21-3 run over a seven-minute stretch to take a 12-point lead and eventually take the game by a 69-57 margin. Over that crucial span, Lauren Edwards and Addie Micir took over, scoring ten and nine points respectively. As a team, Princeton shot 58.3% from the field in the second half, while Fordham managed a 36% shooting mark.
For Fordham, Randall Hurst scored a team-high 18 points to go with three steals, while Annie Zopf had 14 points and six assists. Megan Mahoney chipped in nine points for the Rams with Kristina Bell having a career-high five assists. Takita Earl also had eight points and a team-high six rebounds.
For Princeton, Addie Micir scored a game-high 19 points, hitting 10-for-10 from the free throw line, to go with six rebounds, while Lauren Edwards added 14 points and three steals off the bench.
The Fordham women's basketball team will next be in action on Wednesday, November 19th, as they host Manhattan College in the annual "Battle of the Bronx" at the Rose hill Gym, beginning at 7:00 PM. It will be Faculty & Staff Appreciation Day, where all Fordham faculty and staff are invited to the game.
