Bronx, N.Y. -
It looked like the fans were going to be treated to an overtime men's soccer game on Halloween night as neither Fordham nor Rhode Island could find the back of the net over the first 87 minutes of their Atlantic 10 men's soccer match on Jack Coffey Field. But Tim Richardson sent the Fordham fans home happy in regulation with a header in the 88th minute as Fordham defeated Rhode Island, 1-0.
With the win, the second straight for Fordham and the fourth over the past five games, the Rams improve to 8-6-1 overall on the year, 4-2 in the Atlantic 10, while Rhode Island falls to 6-6-3 overall, 2-2-2 in the conference.
On the game-winner, Grant Kerr sent a pass into the box from the left side and Richardson outjumped his defender and sent a header past Rhode Island keeper Chris Pennock from 14 yards for his third goal of the year.
After a slow first half in which Fordham recorded four shots and Rhode Island three, Fordham controlled play in the second half, outshooting Rhode Island, 11-1, over the final 45 minutes.
Fordham had a chance to break the scoreless tie with 36 minutes remaining when Matt Courtenay took a long feed from midfield and was going in alone on goal, but Pennock came out to deflect the ball away.
In the 68th minute, Sam Jolly sent a direct kick from 30 yards past Pennock but the ball bounced off the cross bar. Two minutes later, Steve Woicik dribbled down the left side and out to the middle, getting off a blast from 20 yards that deflected off a defender.
Just before the game-winning goal, the Rams had a chance to score on a pair of long Woicik thrown-ins. The first came off a loose ball that Kerr pounced on and got off a shot from ten yards that was saved and, 30 seconds later, Richardson got a head on another long throw in that was saved.
Fordham almost made it a 2-0 game in the final seconds as Aaron Markowitz was fed in on a breakaway but Pennock came off the line to make the save on a shot from 20 yards.
Ryan Meara recorded two saves in the Fordham net to notch his sixth shutout of the year while Pennock made six saves in net for Rhode Island.
Fordham will next be in action on Sunday, November 2nd, as they host the University of Massachusetts in an Atlantic 10 match at 1:00 p.m. on Jack Coffey Field.
