The Fordham University water polo squad ventured out to California this weekend to compete in the Claremont Convergence Tournament being held at Claremont College. On the first day, the Rams were upended by the University of Redlands, the top ranked NCAA Division III team in the country, 12-8, and then gave up four penalty shot goals in a 14-11 loss to California Lutheran, the fourth-ranked NCAA Division III school in the nation. With the losses, the Rams fall to 6-6 on the year.
In the first game, Alex Powell and Ryan Hultman led the offense, with each picking up a pair of goals while Tim Simo, Todd Conway, Daniel Muñoz and Martin de Jong each added a goal. Timmy Will made nine saves in net for the Rams.
In the second game, the Rams couldn't overcome the four penalty shot goals from California Lutheran and fell, 14-11. Hultman paced the Fordham offensive attack with three goals while Powell and Andrew McKernin each added two tallies. Conway, Munoz, de Jong and Andrew Dentinger also scored for the Rams while Will recorded 11 saves in net.
The Rams will close out play at the Claremont Convergence Tournament on Saturday by facing Pomona-Pitzer at 3:30 p.m. and then Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 7:30 p.m.
