Bronx, N.Y. -
Offensive aggression was the theme of the night during the Fordham-St. Bonaventure women's soccer game on Friday. Fordham totaled 23 shots on the night and registered three goals en route to a 3-0 win over the Bonnies on Jack Coffey Field.
With the win, Fordham improves to 6-3-1 overall, 3-0 in the Atlantic 10, while St. Bonaventure drops to 5-6-1 on the year, 0-3 in conference play.
"The team was very aggressive tonight and played well," said head coach Ness Selmani. "We created a lot more chances than we normally do and capitalized on those chances."
The offensive barrage by Fordham started right away, as St. Bonaventure goalkeeper Nicole Markert had to come up with five saves in the opening 20 minutes of play, as the Rams had seven shots in that span.
The Rams then cracked the scoreboard at the 22:41 mark. Katie McDermott collected the ball following a St. Bonaventure goal kick, passing it to Courtney Fedge on the right side. Fedge then blistered a 30-yard shot that went through the St. Bonaventure goalkeeper's legs for her first goal of the season.
The half ended with Fordham up 1-0, as the Rams out shot the Bonnies, 12-2, in period, while having a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Fordham made it, 2-0, in the 70th minute, putting together some excellent passing. Lauren Bustos lifted a pass into the St. Bonaventure box, which Katie Sanchez headed over the Bonnies' defenders. Kim Boulos then headed the ball into the left side of the net for her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
St. Bonaventure then put on some pressure on the Fordham goal, trying to cut into the lead. Their best chance came from Anna Cunningham, who streaked down the right side of the box for a shot, but Jen Byer came out and made a right hand save to deflect the ball away and keep the Bonnies scoreless.
Fordham capped the scoring in the 84th minute, as Katherine Wah netted her first career goal on a ten-yard shot to the right side of the net with the assist going to Leah Loguidice.
By game's end, Fordham amassed 23 shots to St. Bonaventure's five, while having a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
In net, Jen Byer made three saves for her fourth shutout of the season, while Nicole Markert had ten saves.
The Fordham women's soccer team will next be in action on Sunday, October 5th, as they host the Duquesne Dukes for an Atlantic 10 match at 1:00 PM. It is the first half of a soccer doubleheader on Jack Coffey Field, as the Fordham men's team will take on Bryant at approximately 3:30 PM.
