Volleyball Wins Five-Set Showdown With Fairfield

Bronx, N.Y. - In a wild affair at the Rose Hill Gym, Fordham's Katie Wells matched a career-high with 22 kills, while Katherine Burrell dished out a season-high 68 assists, as the Rams edged the Fairfield Stags in five sets on Wednesday night. Final set scores were 28-30, 25-13, 24-26, 33-31, and 15-13.

With the win, Fordham evens their record at 14-14 overall, while Fairfield drops to 14-11 on the year.

The match started with 21 tie scores and seven lead changes in set one. With the set knotted at 28, Fairfield picked up points on a Fordham error and a service ace by Katie Mann to win the first set.

In set two, Fordham dominated with a 12-point win, where the Rams hit .417 in the set, led by Katie Wells and Christi Griffiths, who each had four kills.

In the third set, Fordham got momentum early from Kim Capicotto, who posted three straight service aces to give the Rams a 5-4 lead. Fordham led by as many as four points in the set, but Fairfield came all the way back to tie the set at 24. The Stags then got a kill from Lauren Hughes and a block from Hughes and Mann to take a 2-1 set lead.

Fordham though rallied back in set four, taking the set into extra points for the third time in the match. At 31 all, Wells came through with a kill to give Fordham set point, where a bad set by Fairfield's Lauren Balmert knotted the match at two sets each.

In the decisive fifth set, Fairfield jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but the Rams eventually tied the set at six on a kill by Jolanda Gunning-Snowden. The set went to 13-13 with Capicotto serving for Fordham. The Rams then got consecutive kills from Gunning-Snowden to put the match away for Fordham.

For Fordham, Katie Wells tied a career-high with 22 kills to go with five digs, while Jolanda Gunning-Snowden tied a season-high with 14 kills. Christi Griffiths chipped in 15 kills with Kailee May adding a double-double with 13 kills and 18 digs. Jenna Hart also posted a double-double with 11 kills and a career-high 17 digs, while Katherine Burrell dished out a season-high 68 assists to go with 19 digs and five kills. Defensively, Megan Arend and Bianca Hernandez both recorded career-highs with 23 and 16 digs, respectively.

The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Friday, October 31st, for a Halloween showdown with La Salle University at the Rose Hill Gym, beginning at 7:00 PM.
