For the third straight week, the Fordham volleyball team went the distance against an Atlantic 10 opponent, but still could not get the final point, as the Rams lost a five-set decision to the George Washington Colonials at the Smith Center in Washington, D.C. Final set scores were 20-25, 31-33, 26-24, 26-24, and 15-13.
With the loss, Fordham goes to 12-14 overall, 1-6 in league play, while George Washington goes to 12-8 overall, 5-3 in the Atlantic 10.
As in their matches against Saint Louis and Xavier, Fordham got out to a great start, posting a five-point win in set one, 25-20. The Rams were paced by Kailee May's six kills.
In set two, there were 13 tie scores and had George Washington with set point at 30-29. The Rams though got a kill from Christi Griffiths and a block from Katherine Burrell and Katie Wells to give the Rams a set point. After a kill by the Colonials evened the set, Wells recorded a kill, followed by a George Washington attack error, giving the Rams a 2-0 set lead.
Set three also came down to the wire with the Colonials leading 24-22. Fordham then tied the set at 24 on kills by Griffiths and Sara Friede. The Colonials however recorded two straight points following a timeout to win set three.
In set four, the Rams did get a match point, up 24-23, but committed a service error, following a timeout. The Colonials then got a kill and a Fordham error to force a fifth set.
In the fifth set, the score was tied at 11 before the Colonials scored two straight, taking a 13-11 lead. Fordham cut the deficit to one twice on kills by May and Jenna Hart, but the Colonials got a kill from Leah Hill to win the final set, 15-13.
For Fordham, Christi Griffiths recorded a match-high 22 kills to go with a .514 hitting percentage and three blocks, while Katie Wells had 18 kills and four blocks. Kailee May recorded a double-double with 16 kills and 17 digs, while Sara Friede also had a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs. Jenna Hart added 10 kills, seven digs and four blocks with Katherine Burrell dishing out 67 assists to go with 16 digs and three kills.
The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Sunday, October 26th, as they play at Charlotte, beginning at noon.
