Bronx, N.Y. -
Fordham's Katie McDermott scored the only goal of the contest, while the Fordham defense kept the sheet clean, as the Fordham Rams shutout the Rhode Island Rams, 1-0, at Jack Coffey Field on Friday night.
With the win, Fordham improves to 9-4-2 overall, 6-1-1 in the Atlantic 10, while Rhode Island falls to 6-10-1 overall, 2-6-0 in the league.
"Our defense did a tremendous job tonight," said head coach Ness Selmani. "I've been praising our defense every week and they deserve it."
In the first half, neither team mustered much offense until the final minutes of the period. Fordham's Danielle Ingram picked up the ball near midfield in the 44th minute, and got the ball to Kim Boulos down the sideline. Boulos then crossed the ball to Katie McDermott, who fired home her fourth goal of the season, giving Fordham a 1-0 lead.
From that point on, the Fordham defense locked down on Rhode Island, allowing just six shots and one corner kick in the match.
In net, Fordham's Elisabeth Roald made three saves for her second consecutive shutout, while Rhode Island's Agnes Arnadottir made seven saves.
The Fordham women's soccer team will next be in action on Sunday, October 26th, when they host the University of Massachusetts for their final home game of the season, beginning at 1:00 PM. Prior to the game, the Rams will celebrate Senior Day, honoring Fordham's five seniors.
