For the second straight match, the Fordham volleyball team took an undefeated Atlantic 10 team to the brink. Unfortunately, Xavier came back from two sets down to squeak out a victory over the Rams in five sets. Final set scores were 22-25, 19-25, 25-15, 25-20, and 15-13.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 11-12 overall, 1-4 in league play, while Xavier improves to 12-8 overall, 5-0 in the Atlantic 10.
Fordham came out firing taking the first two sets off Xavier, as they tried to defeat the Musketeers for just the second time in team history, and first on the road. After pulling out a three-point win in set one, Fordham held Xavier to a .082 hitting percentage in set two, while Jenna Hart led the Fordham attack with seven kills and a .750 hitting percentage.
The momentum however switched in set three, as Xavier hit .515, led by Hillary Otte's six kills, winning the set by ten points.
In a crucial fourth set, Fordham kept the score close, down two, 20-18. The Rams however tied the set at 20 on kills from Sara Friede and Katherine Burrell. Xavier though scored the next five points to win the set, as Kelly Ruth had three kills in that stretch.
In the deciding fifth set, neither team could muster more than a two-point lead, as they were eventually tied at 12. After a service error gave Xavier the lead, Shannon Voors connected on a kill to give the Musketeers match point.
Fordham fought off the first match point on a kill by Christi Griffiths, and had a chance to tie the set at 14 after a dig by Burrell on the ensuing play. Kailee May however could not get her attack in play, giving Xavier the final point of the match.
For Fordham, Jenna Hart recorded 14 kills, eight blocks, and five assists, while Christi Griffiths posted 14 kills and seven blocks. Sara Friede (10 kills and 10 digs), Kailee May (10 kills and 14 digs), and Katherine Burrell (46 assists and 17 digs) all recorded double-doubles in the match, with Megan Arend adding 14 digs.
The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Saturday, October 18th, as they play at Dayton, beginning at 7:00 PM.
