Water Polo Explodes For 14 Goals in Win Over Harvard

Bronx, N.Y. - The Fordham water polo team had an outstanding group performance on Sunday, highlighted by Alex Powell's five goals and Timmy Will's 13 saves, as the Rams defeated Harvard, 14-6, at the Col. Francis B. Messmore Pool. It was the first Fordham win over Harvard in water polo since the 1999 Northern Division Playoffs, snapping a string of 13 straight losses to the Crimson.

With the win, Fordham improves to 9-8 overall, 1-3 in conference play, while Harvard falls to 2-9 overall, 1-3 in the league.

"It was great to see the team come together today after two tough losses the past couple of days," said head coach Bill Harris. "The kids wanted to win and they deserved to win. Everyone contributed to this win."

Compared to the previous two games this weekend, the Rams improved their play with the extra man advantage, scoring three extra strength goals to go along with a penalty shot goal.

Fordham started out strong, leading 3-1, after the first period on goals from Alex Powell, Ryan Hultman, and Todd Conway.

Fordham extended their lead to 5-2 in the second, as Powell scored on a penalty shot, while Tim Simo just beat the shot clock with one second left, scoring to the top left corner of the net.

The Rams then pulled away with a seven-goal third period, increasing their lead to 12-4, as Powell scored three times in the period with Scott Nemecek adding two goals. Conway and Martin de Jong also scored for Fordham.

Hultman closed out the Fordham scoring with two goals in the fourth to give the Rams a 14-6 victory.

For Fordham, Alex Powell led all scorers with five goals, while Scott Nemecek had two goals and four assists. Ryan Hultman added three goals with Todd Conway having two. Daniel Muñoz also dished out three assists, while Timmy Will came up big in net with 13 stops.

The Fordham water polo team will next be in action on Thursday, October 16th, when they play at Connecticut College, beginning at 8:30 PM.
