Water Polo Outlasted by MIT, 7-6

Oct. 11, 2008

Bronx, N.Y. - MIT'S Devin Lewis scored four goals, while the MIT defense was able to get a defensive stop in the final moments to hold on to a 7-6 victory over the Fordham Rams on Saturday morning.

With the loss, Fordham falls to 8-8 on the season, 0-3 in Northern Division play, while MIT improves to 4-8.

MIT grabbed a 2-1 lead in the first quarter on goals by Devin Lewis and Mike Smith-Bornstein. Fordham's goal came from Ryan Hultman.

In the second period, MIT took a two-goal lead on Lewis' second of the game, but Fordham knotted the game at three on goals by Martin deJong and Hultman. MIT however regained the lead on a goal by Brian Gardiner heading into the half.

MIT then pushed their lead to 6-3 with a pair of early goals by Lewis in the third period.

Fordham fought back to within one, 6-5, as Scott Nemecek scored at the close of the third period and Daniel Muñoz opened the fourth with a goal. Lewis though again responded for MIT with a goal with 4:20 remaining.

Andrew Dentinger cut the lead in half with a goal for Fordham with 3:39 to go. The Rams then had the man-advantage in the final 30 seconds with a chance to tie the game. Unfortunately a pass to the left post went just out of Andrew McKernin's reach out of bounds, allowing MIT to kill the clock for the win.

The Rams finished the game 1-for-8 with the man advantage, while also going 0-for-1 on penalty shots.

For Fordham, Ryan Hultman finished with two goals and an assist, while Andrew Dentinger and Scott Nemecek each had a goal and an assist. In net, Timmy Will finished with eight saves and two steals.

The Fordham water polo team will next be in action on Sunday, October 12th, as they host Harvard University at 4:30 PM at the Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatic Center.
