Volleyball Edged Out By Saint Louis

Bronx, N.Y. - The Fordham volleyball team gave Saint Louis all it handle at the Rose Hill Gym on Saturday afternoon, but the Billikens got out with a five-set victory over the Rams. Final set scores were 21-25, 25-20, 28-30, 29-27, and 15-8.

With the loss, Fordham goes to 10-11 on the year, 1-3 in the Atlantic 10, while Saint Louis moves to 15-4 overall, 6-0 in conference play.

Fordham came out playing extremely well as they took the first set by four. The Rams hit .321 in the set, led by Christi Griffiths' seven kills and .714 hitting percentage.

In set two, Fordham was again ahead late, but Saint Louis connected for four straight points, two on kills by Bridget Fonke, giving the Billikens a 20-16 lead. Fordham closed within two at 22-20 on a kill by Kailee May, but Saint Louis closed out the set with the final three points.

With the match knotted at one set apiece, set three saw 18 tie scores and eight lead changes. At 28 all, Fordham grabbed a one-point lead on a kill by Jenna Hart. Then on the following play, Griffiths came through with an attack, where Saint Louis was called for a block error, giving the Rams set three, 30-28.

In set four, Fordham had match point at 25-24 on a kill by Griffiths, but the Billikens' Sammi McLoud connected on consecutive kills to give Saint Louis a set point. The two teams then exchanged sideouts until a kill by Sally Warning gave Saint Louis a 29-27 set win.

In the deciding fifth set, Fordham jetted out to a 5-2 lead, capitalizing on two Billiken errors. Saint Louis responded however with a 10-1 run, highlighted by four kills from Fonke, giving Saint Louis the momentum and eventually going on to a 15-8 win in set five.

For Fordham, Christi Griffiths connected for 20 kills and four blocks, while Katie Wells had 14 kills and three blocks. Jenna Hart added 12 kills with Kailee May having nine kills and 22 digs. Sara Friede also chipped in eight kills and 11 digs, with Katherine Burrell finishing with 53 assists, 12 digs, and four kills.

For Saint Louis, Sammi McCloud recorded 25 kills, 15 digs, and six blocks, while Whitney Roth had seven kills, 56 assists, and eight digs.

The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Wednesday, October 15th, as they play at Rutgers, beginning at 7:00 PM.
